Prof. Pablo Valdivia Lecturer of the Year Faculty of Arts

22 November 2018

Prof. Pablo Valdivia has been voted Lecturer of the Year of the Faculty of Arts. According to the Jury Pablo's way of presenting was engaging as well as very relatable. He started off with a case study related to "bubbles" which crystalized the idea that we are all preoccupied with our own lives in essence. Based on this he related various theories and concepts to this example, showing the relevance of his research to various different areas, not just the classroom.

By winning the faculty lecturer of the year, prof. Valdivia is automatically nominated for the University of Groningen Lecturer of the Year election on 30 January 2019.

Professor Pablo Valdivia is the Chair of European Culture and Literature at the University of Groningen. His research deals primarily with the notions of Literature and Crisis from an interdisciplinary transnational perspective. The relation between Exile and Literature and Literary Interculturality are some of his main research focus as well. He is an expert on Cultural Narratives and Conceptual Metaphors. He carries multidisciplinary research with special emphasis in the fields of Social Sciences, Cultural Industries and Cognitive Sciences.

Inaugural lecture

Next week on 27 November Prof. Pablo Valdivia will give his inaugural lecture: ‘The Fictions of the Tribe and the New Humanities.’ In this inaugural lecture, he will elaborate on what he believes is the key problem of our contemporary society, the cultural tribalization of our societies, and the manner in which what he calls the “New Humanities” is ready to help, the solutions literary scholars can bring to the table of our societal challenges and how the study of literature as a “transformative research-based” discipline has the potential to bring hope where there is currently despair.
