Daan Raemaekers new Vice Dean of Faculty of Arts

As of 1 September 2015, the Board of the University of Groningen has appointed Professor Daan Raemaekers Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts. He will be following in the steps of Professor Dirk Jan Wolffram.

Daan Raemaekers (1969) is Professor of Prehistory and Protohistory. As Vice Dean he has been assigned the portfolio for Education.
He studied cultural prehistory at the University of Leiden where he obtained his PhD in 1999 on a study of the Swifterbant culture. He then worked for a number of years as researcher and project leader on excavations and prospection projects in the provinces of South Holland, Limburg, Utrecht and Flevoland. In 2002 Raemaekers was appointed to the Van der Leeuw Chair in Prehistory and Protohistory. His research focuses on prehistoric communities in Northwestern Europe, and in particular on the pre-Western nature of these communities.

Since his appointment, Raemaekers has held the position of Director of the Groningen Institute of Archaeology (GIA), Secretary of the Board of the Archaeology department, and member of the Board of the Research Master’s programme in Art history and Archaeology, and he has acted as a member of the Board of Examiners for Archaeology and the Secretary of the Board of Examiners for the Research Master’s in Art History and Archaeology.

As a member of the Faculty Board, he hopes to contribute to the involvement of the faculty community in the challenges facing our Faculty, and the position of the Faculty within the University of Groningen.
