"Soft Cut"

Since the introduction of the so-called "Hard Cut access” it has only been possible to start your Master's after graduation for your Bachelor's. Due to the Corona measures, education at the University of Groningen and other universities is currently provided digitally. The University acknowledges that the adjustment to the new ways of teaching and studying may cause study delay for some students.

The exceptional situation due to the Corona crisis requires special measures. The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has, therefore, decided that the “Hard Cut” requirement for starting the Master's programme may for once, under certain conditions, be disregarded. This means that the transfer from the Bachelor's to the Master's programme for the upcoming academic year (2020-2021) will be allowed with a so-called "Soft Cut" access. At the 1st of September 2020, you may start your Master's programme under specific conditions (described below), even if you have not yet fully completed your Bachelor's programme. Consequently, you can enroll for master courses, in order to limit study delay as much as possible.

The admissions board of your Master's programme decides whether you can be admitted.

For the Master Educational Sciences a "Soft Cut" is allowed for enrollment in the academic year 2020/2021 under the following conditions:

  • The deficiency in the Bachelor's may not exceed 15 ECTS;
  • The student must have completed the Bachelor’s thesis;
  • Awarding of the "Soft Cut" for pre-master students is at the discretion of the admissions committee. For pre-master students without exemptions in the transition programme a maximum deficiency of 15 ECTS applies. The admissions committee judges on an individual level the allowed deficiency of students with an abbreviated program (transition program with exemptions).

Admission with a soft cut means you are simultaneously registered for your Bachelor's and Master's programme. This is allowed for a maximum of one academic year, so you have to complete your Bachelor's degree in 2020-2021. If you haven’t completed your Bachelor's before 1 September 2021, you cannot re-enroll your Master's programme the following academic year. This is only possible after you have completed your Bachelor's. During the double enrollment you only pay tuition fees for your Master's programme.

When you think you qualify for admission with the "Soft Cut", the following is important.

>> Re-enroll in Studielink
Please re-enroll as a bachelor or pre-master student before 1 August 2020 and register for your (GMW) master's programme in Studylink. Your request will then be processed automatically. Please note: re-enrollment for your Bachelor's or pre-master's programme is possible as of June 1, 2020.

  • Next for bachelor students: start your graduation procedure in Progress before 1 August 2020. In August, the Student Administration will check whether the students who have enrolled for a master's programme in Studylink meet the admission criteria. For bachelor students, this check is done on the basis of the graduation package in the graduation procedure in ProgressWWW. Once you have met the admission criteria, the administration will make an admission statement. This statement will be sent to the central student administration for your enrollment. You will receive a copy of this statement on your UG email.
  • Next for SPO 'schakel'students: send a request to the admissions board via toelatingscommissie.pedok

Please Note: Due to the longer review periods at this time, the processing of your results may be a little later than normal. As a result, the assessment of your application may take a little longer. We will inform you as soon as possible about the progress of your application.

It is wise to think carefully about the planning of your Master's year while you still have to complete bachelor courses. The academic advisor can help you with a realistic planning. Please do not hesitate to contact your academic advisor. For questions about the procedure, please contact the faculty's Student Service Desk and Administration ( owbalie.gmw ).
