Religion and Politics

Anthropological and sociological perspectives on religion, naturalism and ethnicity

Many perspectives in political science depart from the premise that religion and politics should be kept separate. Meanwhile, it is becoming more and more obvious that religion does influence politics in crucial ways, is entwined with it. Furthermore, religion plays an important role in the kinds of processes that politics wants to influence: societal conflicts, but also peace efforts.

During the meetings we will discuss general perspectives on Religion and Politics. In addition, we will make a study of the situation in Nigeria throughout the course. Students will give presentations on the literatire and will write a review article on the literature. The course will be concluded by writing a paper on a chosen subject related to the course for a popular audience.
