Candidates will be selected based on their suitability and motivation for the programme. The highest ranked candidates will be admitted to the programme. The ranking will be based on the candidates' selection test result and the portfolio.

Prospective students can apply for a numerus fixus degree programme from 1 October 2023 until 15 January 2024, 23:59 (CET). More information on how to take part in the numerus fixus procedure will be sent to you by email after 15 January 2024.

Sign Up for the Training Day! (optional)

In preparation for the selection test, we are organizing a training day on campus for each of the three programmes. This day will give you a better insight into what to expect of the selection test. There is of course also the opportunity to get to know a few of your potential fellow students and see what the university is like!

For each programme, the training day will take place on Friday the 12th of January from 13:00-17:00. You can sign up until the 4th of January 23:59h CET. A few days before the training day, you will receive additional information via the email you signed up with.

The training day will not be recorded and it is not possible to join online. In case you are not able to attend physically, any exercises covered during the training day and their solutions will be made available online on the Student Portal afterwards.

Numerus fixus (selection) procedure

For each candidate, the selection procedure consists of two parts:

  • a portfolio
  • an online selection test

1. Numerus fixus portfolio

The portfolio should be submitted on the Student Portal. The deadline for submitting the complete portfolio is 18 February 2024, 23:59h (CET). All items should be in English and in PDF format.

The portfolio should contain the following items:

  • An official copy of your most recent final grades signed by your school. For current high school students, these will be the most recent grades as per 15 January 2024 that count toward your final grade. Candidates of the Dutch school system who were in 5 vwo in school year 2022-2023 hand in a SE grade list. This list of marks consists of the SE grades obtained from 4 vwo until 15 January 2024 in 6 vwo. We will look at the candidate’s level and grades on the courses required for entry to the bachelor programme.
  • A Curriculum Vitae, detailing the candidate’s relevant experience (1 page max.).
  • A motivation letter in which applicants state why they are the right candidate for the programme (400 words max.).

2. Online selection test

Candidates are also expected to be available for the online selection test, which will be open from 5 February 2024 9:00h CET until 9 February 2024 17:00h CET. Tests submitted after the deadline will not be accepted! Information on where to find this test will be sent to all applicants who have applied for the programme before the application deadline 15 January 2024, 23:59h (CET).

  • AI:

The selection test will be directed towards testing basic skills that are required to fruitfully start the programme and will concentrate on your ability to interpret basic philosophical, logical, linguistic and programming concepts. No preparation is required for these questions. In addition, a mathematical test will be part of the selection procedure. There is no specific set of materials to study for this test, but a list of topics will be emailed to you a few weeks ahead of the test. To give a general impression: candidates are mostly tested on basic mathematical operations (such as the simplification of expressions) and their knowledge of derivation and basic integration.

  • BME:

The selection is primarily focused to evaluate if a candidate has the ability to finish their biomedical engineer program succesfully based on their prior knowledge and general skills. By assessing the student on their mathematical skills, their ability to think logically and creatively on real life topics and expressing their solutions in an understandable way.

  • CS:

The selection test will be directed towards testing basic skills that are required to fruitfully start the programme and will concentrate on the ability to solve problems in an algorithmic manner, the ability to logically analyse a situation and possibly argumentation skills. No preparation is required for these questions. In addition, a mathematical test will be part of the selection procedure. There is no specific set of materials to study for this test, but a list of topics will be emailed to you a few weeks ahead of the test.

Please note! if you do not meet the deadline for the selection test and the portfolio, if you hand in an incomplete portfolio and/or if you do not complete all parts of the selection test, you will not receive a ranking number and you will not be admitted to the programme.

After the selection

All prospective students will receive a ranking number through Studielink on 15 April 2024. If you are offered a place in the programme, make sure you accept it in Studielink within 2 weeks. More information on this procedure can be found here.

Please note! If you have not been awarded a place in the top of the ranking of the bachelor programme, there is still a realistic chance that you will be offered a place in the months following the ranking. Therefore, if you would like to study at the University of Groningen, you should not de-enroll too soon: based on previous years, offering places can continue until July or August.

Admission procedure

Next to the selection, the admission procedure is another (separate) step in the application process. To be able to start a study programme, the student must meet the entry requirements. In order to determine the admissibility, a student goes through the admission procedure. The admission procedure for prospective students with a Dutch diploma is significantly different from that of candidates with a non-Dutch diploma. The procedure for candidates with a non-Dutch diploma is more extensive, e.g. applicants will also have to submit their application through the Progress Portal.
