From plastic-recycling waste gas to valuable chemicals

How can effluent gases from plastic recycling be better managed to produce more valuable chemicals? The PRIME-GAS project (Plastic Recycling with Integrated Management of Effluent Gas) brings together Prof. Jingxiu Xie of the Engineering and Technology institute Groningen (ENTEG) and BioBTX to address this challenge.
PRIME-GAS project
The project will develop an integrated effluent gas management strategy for BioBTX’s Integrated Cascading Catalytic Pyrolysis (ICCP) technology.
PRIME-GAS will pursue two complementary research lines to increase BTX yield by 10 wt.% compared with the baseline process. The first focuses on suppressing methane formation, as methane cannot be upgraded to BTX (benzene, toluene and xylenes). The second aims to introduce additional catalytic functions to convert other gaseous products into BTX. Together, these approaches are expected to enable cleaner operations and more sustainable plastic recycling.
ChemistryNL
The project has a total budget of EUR 730,000 and receives EUR 499,000 in subsidies from ChemistryNL. The funding was awarded under the PPS-I 2026 call of TKI Green Chemistry and Circularity, within the theme Transforming the Dutch Chemical Industry towards Sustainable Production.
