Grant awarded to Liza Herzog & Tetiana Stepura by NWO Hop-On Calls

20 May 2026

Dutch and Ukrainian researchers are set to collaborate once again through the second grant round of the ‘NWO Hop-On Call for Researchers Based in Ukraine’. Eleven ongoing Dutch NWO projects are adding a researcher from Ukraine to their project team. In total, these awarded projects involve more than 270,000 euros.

About the call

‘NWO Hop-On Call for Researchers Based in Ukraine 2025’ offers ongoing NWO projects the opportunity to add a qualified researcher from Ukraine to their project team. The initiative is intended to support Ukrainian researchers in expanding their professional network within the Dutch academic world. Project teams can contribute through advice, mentoring and other forms of guidance. This is the second grant round within the collaborative initiative between the National Research Foundation of Ukraine (NRFU) and NWO. In the first grant round, thirteen projects were awarded a total of 250,000 euros. With an increased budget of €480,000, this round offers new opportunities for knowledge exchange and network strengthening. At present, the maximum budget for this call has not yet been reached. Proposals can therefore still be submitted.

Working Democracy. A philosophy of work for democratic societies

Main applicants: prof. dr. L.M. Herzog (University of Groningen) & dr. T. Stepura (Lviv Polytechnic National University) What does it mean to be a migrant worker if one works remotely, through digital technology? Historically, the integration of migrants into host societies has often taken place through work. What happens if they instead earn a living remotely? This project analyses this question by focussing on the case of highly-skilled Ukrainian migrant workers who work remotely while living in other European countries. It will conduct interviews, primarily with IT workers, to understand better how remote work influences the experience of migration.

Thanks to a grant won in the framework of the NWO-NRFU Partnership Initiative, Lisa Herzog and Tetiana Stepura can continue their collaboration that explores the work experiences of Ukrainian migrant in Europe, this time with a focus on the effects of remote work on forced migrants.
