AI at the UG
The UG has a long history in the field of AI development, both in research and education. Since the 1990s, the UG has been working on the development of AI technology. The last several years, the use of AI, due to the emergence of Generative AI, has increased significantly within a range of research areas and more research is being done on its social, ethical and legal impact.
The number of AI-related initiatives at the UG is growing. On this webpage, you will find an overview of our AI initiatives in research, education and business operations.
Degree Programmes
Post graduate programmes
This course was specifically developed for legal professionals, such as governmental lawyers and other lawyers that want to deepen their knowledge about the legal aspects of emerging technologies, especially AI and cybersecurity.
Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence
The Bernoulli Institute is a research institute within the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE). The institute plays a central role in the AI community of the university with research groups that, for example, focus on Autonomous Perceptive Systems, Cognitive Modeling and Multi-Agent Systems. The institute is involved in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes that focus on AI, in which students are taught to develop smart digital systems and advanced AI systems.
Center for Language and Cognition
The Center for Language and Cognition (CLCG) researches language and cognition, with a strong focus on language-based AI such as natural language processing (NLP). The Computational Linguistics (CL) group develops and researches AI-applications and organizes public events about language technologies. They also teach courses, such as the Ethical Aspects in Natural Language Processing. Additionally, the group provides seminars and workshops to increase the awareness of the workings, benefits and dangers of the development and the use of language technology.
Groningen Engeneering Center (GEC)
The Groningen Engineering Center (GEC) is an interdisciplinairy platform that focusses on the technical and technological innovations and combines all the technical research and education within the university. Within the GEC, AI is being applied in several domains, such as autonomous systems, health care and environmental technology.
Interactive Robot Learning Laboratory (IRL-LAB)
The Interactive Robot Learning Laboratory (IRL-Lab) focuses on the development of robots that learn through their interaction with people, with special attention to life-long learning. The lab also tackles unanswered questions that focus on the intersection of robotics, computer vision and machine learning. They develop algorithms and systems to understand the underlying principles of robust sensorimotor coordination of humans and animals, with the aim to improve the skills and autonomy of complex robotic systems.
Humane AI
The 'Humane AI' group studies the social implications of the interaction between humans and new technologies, with specific attention to language-based technologies, which continuously foster innovation in human-human and human-machine interaction.
Jantina Tammes School of Digital Society, Technology and AI
The Jantina Tammes School (JTS) is an interdisciplinairy platform that focuses on digital society, techology and AI. The school plays an important role in improving a responsible and inclusive approach to AI. By connecting researchers from different disciplines, JTS researchers work together to solve complex issues related to AI. Additionally, the school offers educational programmes, such as courses, workshops and lectures that prepare students and professionals for the challenges of a digital society. The Jantina Tammes School explores how societies can optimally benefit from and contribute to digitization, digital technologies, and artificial intelligence (AI). Their motto: digital prosperity for all.
Center for Information Technology
The Center for Information Technology (CIT) offers knowledge and support to staff and students on the topics of AI-tools, machine learning, data visualization and high-performance computing. The CIT's Research Support Hub regularly organizes AI workshops and offers assistance to researchers. Within the CIT, Educational Support and Innovation (ESI) supports teachers in integrating AI in teaching. ESI gives advice, teaches workshops and develops innovative educational applications to help teachers use AI effectively and responsibly.
Visibility AI-network
Is your group within the UG also working on AI, but are you not in this overview? Please let us know, so we can increase the visibility of the AI-network within the UG.
