Staying healthy and fit at work

The University of Groningen promotes health and fitness among its staff.

BALANS

The University’s Health, Safety and Environment department (AMD, Arbo- en Milieudienst) has developed the BALANS lifestyle programme.

This programme covers five central elements, which in Dutch abbreviate to BRAVO: sufficient exercise, quitting smoking, a responsible approach to alcohol, healthy eating and proper relaxation.

Participation in BALANS activities is voluntary and open to all staff members of the University of Groningen. Courses vary from Zumba and salsa to mindfulness, yoga and ‘health checks’. In addition to full courses, trial lessons are also regularly organized where staff can try out a sport or activity free of charge.

Assistance is offered to staff members who want to quit smoking, and dietary advice is also available.

This way the University aims to show its staff who perhaps could improve their lifestyle that minor health investments can have great effects.

SPR Sports

Sports enthusiasts are welcome to join the SPR , the joint sports association of the University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen, where they can play sports individually or participate in activities such as football and tennis tournaments.

The SPR also organizes an annual sports day.

Balance between work and private life

The University of Groningen aims to contribute to a healthy balance between its staff’s professional and private lives, for example via its terms of employment such as parental leave and care leave.
