Janssen, Dr Fanny
Fanny Janssen holds a Bachelor in Human Geography and a Master in Demography, both obtained at the University of Groningen. In addition she has obtained a Master degree in Epidemiology in Rotterdam. There she wrote her PhD thesis on explaining determinants of trends in old-age mortality in Europe. Janssen is Assistant Professor in Analytical Demography, works one day a week at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute, and is a member of the Healthy Ageing Population & Society coordination team.
She focuses mainly on mortality and health at population level in the Netherlands and Europe. Janssen’s fields of interest also include mortality and specific cause of death, health and drug use at population level, explanatory factors, lifestyle, smoking, mortality projections and geographical differences in health and mortality.
May 2014, she received a prestigious Dutch research fellowship (VIDI) from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research to conduct research on future mortality in Europe in the coming five years. The full title of her research proposal is ‘Smoking, alcohol and obesity - ingredients for improved and robust mortality projections’. Janssen is also the Faculty of Spatial Sciences Teacher of the Year 2014. In 2018 she received the prestigious 2018 Allianz European Demographer Award for her outstanding research on the long-term development of mortality and health patterns across Europe.
