Fanny Janssen

Fanny Janssen studeerde Sociale geografie (Bachelor) en Demografie (Master) aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Daarnaast heeft ze een masteropleiding in de Epidemiologie afgerond in Rotterdam. Janssens promotieonderzoek in Rotterdam richtte zich op de verklarende factoren in de ontwikkelingen in de sterfte op hoge leeftijd in Europa. Ze is universitair docent Analytische demografie, werkt 1 dag in de week bij het Nederlands Interdisciplinair Demografisch Instituut, en is lid van het coördinatieteam van Healthy Ageing Population & Society.

Als demograaf en epidemioloog doet Janssen voornamelijk onderzoek binnen de onderzoekslijnen Population, Mortality and Health (Bevolking, sterfte en gezondheid) en Applying demographic and geographic techniques to medicine use (De toepassing van demografische en geografische technieken op medicijngebruik), en begeleidt ze promovendi. Haar focus daarbij ligt vooral op sterfte en gezondheid op bevolkingsniveau in Nederland en Europa. Tot Janssens interessegebieden behoren sterfte en doodsoorzaakspecifieke sterftes, gezondheid en medicijngebruik op bevolkingsniveau, verklarende factoren, leefstijl, roken, sterfteprojecties, en geografische verschillen in gezondheid en sterfte.

In mei 2014 sleepte Janssen een prestigieuze VIDI-subsidie van de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) in de wacht om toekomstige sterftecijfers in Europa te voorspellen. De volledige titel van haar onderzoeksvoorstel is ‘Smoking, alcohol and obesity - ingredients for improved and robust mortality projections’ (Roken, drinken en overgewicht - ingrediënten voor verbeterde en lang houdbare sterfteprognoses). Ook is Janssen in 2014 uitgeroepen tot Docent van het Jaar van de Faculteit Ruimtelijke Wetenschappen. In 2018 ontving ze de prestigieuze Allianz European Demographer Award voor haar bijdrage in het onderzoek naar de langetermijnontwikkeling van mortaliteit en gezondheidspatronen in heel Europa.
