Klaas van Veen

Behavioural and Social Sciences

Prof. K. van Veen (1970) is professor of Education and Educational Research for the University’s Teacher Education programme. Van Veen studied at the Pedagogische Academie Basisonderwijs, PABO (Primary School Teacher Training College) in Zwolle and subsequently followed the Educational Studies programme at Radboud University in Nijmegen, where he gained his PhD and worked as a university lecturer. After that he was affiliated with the University of Leiden as an associate professor.

Van Veen is known as a ‘real education animal’, in both practice and theory. His Chair is oriented toward training teachers and researching teachers’ professional skills. He studies the developments that teachers undergo throughout their career in terms of their knowledge, as well as their professional didactic expertise and their general pedagogical-didactic proficiencies. In this context, Van Veen pays an exceptional amount of attention to the issue of whether or not the development of such proficiencies leads to better results in education and thus learning benefits for pupils and students. His own students praise him for his stimulating style of lecturing and his clear, compact and absorbing outlines. ‘An inspiring lecturer who is capable of relating a good and transparent narrative anchored in reality. In doing so, he makes effective use of multimedia. Lectures have a straightforward structure so that there is little distraction and the story remains long in one’s memory.’
