Welcome to the Winter School for Academic Teachers! We offer several workshops and activities in the week of 31 January till 3 February 2022 to help you prepare for your teaching job.

Crash Course: Fundamentals of University Teaching (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday)

Are you new to teaching and do you want to enhance your teaching skills? Join the Fundamentals to university teaching course!

This course is designed specifically for teachers who are starting their career in education. The programme includes an introduction to academic teaching, preparation of lessons and didactic skills. You are provided with tools to engage and motivate students. And you will be able to practice your teaching skills and receive feedback from your peers and trainer in a microteaching session. Moreover, you are introduced to best practices for giving feedback and assessing assignments and exams.

Monday, January 31st from 09:00-15:30;
Tuesday, February 1st  from 09:00-15:30;
Thursday, February 3rd from 13:00 - 15.30;

Location City center (if on-site meeting for education is allowed, otherwise we will switch to online)

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this module you are able to:

  • describe the design of your course, including the learning objectives, and the teaching and assessment methods;
  • prepare for your lessons and create a lesson plan;
  • deliver interactive lectures and tutorials;
  • create an inclusive classroom environment;
  • provide students with constructive feedback and compare different assessment methods.

Requirements

  • English language skills at a sufficient level to present and to participate in discussions with peers;
  • Assigned teaching duties for the teaching block preferably directly following this crash course, like teaching a full course or at least a significant part of a course.

Introduction to the Dutch Education System (Wednesday)

Would you like to know more about the Dutch education system, your students’ academic backgrounds and the Dutch grading system?

Both secondary and tertiary education consists of different types of schools catering to the specific skills, level, and needs of their students. Students' trajectories may also vary as they are able to switch between schools depending on their progress and pursuits. Besides that, the assessment and grading standards at Dutch universities can differ from other countries’ grading culture. After this course you will have a better understanding of the Dutch education system and be able to better tailor your classes to your students' needs.

Learning outcomes

After following this course, you will be able to:

  • describe the main characteristics of the Dutch education system related to primary, secondary and tertiary schools;
  • compare the UG's grading system with grading systems of other countries;
  • explain how the grading and assessment culture in the Netherlands reflects on your teaching activities;
  • link (international) students' academic backgrounds to their study expectations and habits.

Introduction to UG Educational Support Systems (Thursday)

Within the University of Groningen there are several tools and programs that can support your teaching. In this workshop we will introduce the tools and work alongside you to provide support with practicing with the tools.

You will learn more about the Learning Management System (LMS) nestor, the UG e-learning tools, the digital exams tooling, the different video tools at the university, the student information system and the scheduling tool.

The main focus of this workshop lies on Nestor. This LMS is the core of education at the UG. You will learn more about the basic functionality of the system, how to build a course, the possibiliteies to collaborate within the LMS, the use of videos in courses, how to communicatie with students in Nestor and you will obtain basic knowledge about assignments and grading.

  • find the most important tools for education (Nestor, Progress and Ocasys) and use them in their basic form;
