In addition to good academic skills, you need various other professional skills to be a successful research project leader. You must be able to head a team, take care of project management, and supervise and coach PhD students. If you want to develop these skills, the UG has various courses and workshops you can follow.      

Discuss your strategy for leading the research project and your ongoing professional development with your HR advisor, and the Faculty Funding Officer if required.

If you are a researcher in a team that you are also managing, you are not only acting as an academic, but also as a manager. This requires specific skills. How do you set an inspirational and unifying example? How can you use coaching to get the best out of your team members? How do you guide change processes? And how can you focus on results while also creating a relaxed atmosphere in your team? The UG offers several courses and workshops on effective leadership and leadership skills, suitable for various stages of your academic career.

Project management

You will be expected to organize and launch a project completely on your own. Knowledge of the complex forces surrounding your project, and the business culture within the UG, will give you a head start in this respect. In addition, it is important that you are aware of your own leadership style, able to set priorities, and can identify team dynamics. The UG has various courses that will give you the tools you need to manage your project successfully.

You have various roles as a supervisor of PhD students: you are a fellow researcher, a coach, a contact person, and an assessor. As a supervisor, you can also influence the success of your PhD students. Skills such as coaching, clear communication, and good leadership are crucial to a successful supervision process. If you want to hone your skills in this area, the UG offers several courses that will help you.

Prizes and membership of prestigious organizations

Prizes and membership of prestigious organizations  

Nominations for prizes and membership of academic societies are a token of recognition and appreciation of your research. In addition, prizes and memberships elevate your position in academic circles and help you to acquire funding.    

Nominations

Your research or publication can be nominated for a prize or a grant. Talk to your manager, peers, or advisor, such as a Faculty Funding Officer or a research policy officer, about which prizes, memberships, or grants are best suited to you and your research. The Faculty Deans also play a significant role in nominating suitable candidates. To increase your chances of a nomination, make sure that your profile is up-to-date and inform your Faculty Dean about your ambitions.
