Research Centre for Landscape Studies Education

Courses Historic Country Houses

In November 2017 prof. dr. Hanneke Ronnes and dr. Conrad Gietman were appointed Professor and lecturer respectively in Historic Country Houses and Landed Estates at the Centre for Landscape Studies of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen. This chair is made possible by the Foundation Van der Wyck-De Kempenaer, which granted funding for the period 2012-2017 and 2017-2022.

The chair has a strong interdisciplinary character. Lectures, seminars and research focus on the history of the inhabitants of castles and country houses, as well as the architecture and interiors of the houses and the landscape of its gardens, parks and estates. Attention is also paid to the role castles and country houses play in contemporary society as cultural heritage. With the establishment of this chair Groningen is the only university in the Netherlands with an academic research focus and an educational program devoted to country houses and landed estates.
