Shortened LLM
The Faculty of Law offers incoming master-level exchange students the option to register for a shortened version of our LLM programmes. If you come to Groningen as a master-level exchange student in semester 1 (Fall term), you can decide to apply for the shortened LLM.
For whom?
The shortened LLM option is available for the following exchange students:
-
incoming exchange students at master level
-
incoming exchange students at JD level
-
incoming exchange students in year 4 or 5 of their 5-year Law programme
You cannot join this option if you are coming for exchange during your bachelor's degree, if you come for a full year exchange during your master nor if you come from a university that is not partnered up with the UG Faculty of Law.
How does it work?
You participate in all courses of the full first semester of one of the LLM programmes (seminars included) during your exchange semester. You go home and graduate from your degree programme. Then you return to Groningen (very likely in the next academic year) as a registered and fee-paying LLM student in Groningen in semester 2 and you take the full course load, including the Law in Practice component and the writing of your Master's thesis, to complete your LLM.
You will be awarded the LLM degree from the University of Groningen upon completion of all programme components.
What to do to join?
You need to take the following steps to join this shortened LLM option:
Step 1
This application needs to be done alongside your exchange application. You will have to meet the admission requirements of the LLM programme of your interest. You can find instructions on how to apply here, including the deadline of application (1 May!).
Step 2
When admitted by the Admissions Office, you defer your admission to the next academic year.
You then start your exchange semester in Groningen and complete all compulsory semester 1 courses of the LLM you were admitted to. During this semester you pay tuition fees at your home university and not at the University of Groningen.
Step 3
You complete your paperwork for your exchange, return to your home university and graduate.
You re-apply for the LLM you were already admitted to in the previous year (deadline 1 May!) and send an email to the Admissions Board (through LLM rug.nl) to ask them to approve the change of start date from 1 September to 1 February of that academic year. The Admissions Board will take care of the paperwork for this aberrant entry moment and you will be asked to complete all admission requirements including the payment of your tuition fee before 1 February.
And please do not forget to ask the study advisers to enrol you for the Master's thesis writing for semester 2. This needs to be done by the 25th of October. You can request this through LLM rug.nl.
Step 4
You then start your LLM per 1 February in Groningen and complete all compulsory semester 2 components (including Law in Practice and the Master's thesis) of the LLM you were admitted to.
During this semester you pay tuition fees at the University of Groningen.
After completing all programme components and meeting all administrative steps for graduation, you will be awarded the LLM you were registered to.
Possible clash with academic calendar at your home university
Please be aware that you always have to check the academic calendars of both the UG and your home university. E.g., if you have to return to your home university before the end of block 2 in Groningen, you might not be able to join all available shortened LLMs. In case of doubt, please check with the International Office (exchangelaw rug.nl).
