Technology Law and Innovation

Progress in society depends on innovation of processes and products.

But how does law react to such innovation processes and products such as data-driven challenges in artificial intelligence, internet of things, autonomous vehicles? Our LLM programme in Technology Law and Innovation focuses on the interaction between technology law and innovation. It explores the role of technology law as an enabler of innovation and reflects on examples where law hinders innovation.

In this one year LLM programme students will think creatively and learn from leading researchers in the field of technology law. Building on previous technology law knowledge this LLM offers an opportunity of in-depth reflection on innovation using a technology law 'lens'.

Research

The Faculty of Law conducts research in very many fields of law.

Almost all teaching staff have an appointment to both teach and do research. The Faculty's research is organised into several research programmes. In addition to this, the Faculty houses several Centres of Expertise.

All Faculty researchers are linked to or more of these programmes and/or centres and as a result, students will always hear the latest information with regard to academic research done in the area of their LLM.

For the LLM Technology Law and Innovation, the Security, Technology & e-privacy Research Group is of particular interest.

After completing my LLB in International and European Law (Technology Law track) at the University of Groningen, I was looking for a masters degree focusing solely on technology law which was also research oriented. After a lot of research and studying curriculums of different universities offering Technology Law LLMs, I decided to stay in Groningen and follow the LLM Technology Law and Innovation and I am glad I did.


The Faculty of law is amazing. Due to the small batch size of the LLM, when compared to LLB, there were a lot of opportunities to interact with professors who were always ready to help and guide you to the best of their abilities. Throughout the year, the professors focused on helping the students develop soft skills along with legal knowledge that prepared us for the job market. Additionally, the International Office ( especially the study advisers) are readily available to solve any issue you may have. They are quick to reply to emails and with all the administrative support.

When I moved to Groningen in 2021, I fell in love with this city. It is, as the Dutch people say, Gezellig. Groningen, along with its people, is warm, fun and happening. Studying in Groningen has been one of the best decisions of my life. Everything is close to the city, either a bike ride or train ride away and here are so many bike trails that take you to the countryside with beautiful views. Groningen will always be one of my favorite cities.

The Faculty of Law has prepared me in achieving all my career goals by providing me with an amazing network of colleagues and professors who are more than willing to help at all times. I have also developed a strong foundation of technical and legal knowledge along with skills necessary to conduct research. All the experiences I have gained in my academic and personal journey in the city and at the University of Groningen have prepared me well for what the future holds.

Nexus Student Association Groningen is the student association (studievereniging) for the LLB programme in International and European Law and related master programmes.
These programmes mainly consist of international students and, therefore, Nexus is very internationally orientated. Besides organizing activities to integrate internationals into Dutch culture, such as a political debate with local parties in English, Nexus also aims to provide members with the chance to obtain a social network, participate in the organization of guest lectures or informal activities, attend debating trainings, trips and workshops, all in a multicultural environment.

We are looking for students with a law background, who are motivated to engage critically with technology law. Our students are typically:

  • motivated to learn about technology law
  • able to do independent work and research as well as cooperate in groups
  • active and committed to developing personal and professional skills
  • ready and able to discuss with both their peers and their lecturers
  • well-prepared and thus are able to reflect on what is discussed during classes
  • in possession of an inquiring mind
  • capable of seeing more than the obvious, who can think out of the box, see the wider context of issues
Studiebegeleiding

To support you while studying, the Faculty ensures that the schedule is feasible, that mentors, lecturers, and the study advisers provide active study supervision, that exams are marked quickly and that lecturers and the study advisers are readily contactable.

The Faculty will offer a (compulsory) introduction session with all new students of the Faculty's English-taught programmes and induction sessions for you and your programme members. These are led by the study advisers.

The study advisers are available for all matters that might occur and will hinder your studying. These can be personal issues, unexpected circumstances, but also when you need some help in planning or time management. The study advisers will contact you every once in a while, but you are also more than welcome to join them during their office hours or to ask your question through email. If it looks like you will incur study delay, please contact the study adviser yourself. The study adviser can help you with your planning, and also advise you confidentially about study problems and/or personal problems.
