Economics plays a crucial role in analyzing and addressing societal problems by understanding how individuals, businesses, and governments make choices in the face of limited resources, like time or money. While united in the methodological approach, the questions economics seeks to answer are diverse:

What is the best way to reduce CO2 emissions?
How do households decide how much to save for retirement?
Why do some markets need regulation and others not?
How should you design monetary policy to keep inflation low?
Why are some countries rich and some poor?
How to make healthcare more accessible and affordable?
How do social norms affect behaviour and policies?
Why do women earn less than men?

As an economist, you have an analytical mindset and you use data to study and assess economic policies: In short, you keep a cool head when it comes to making decisions for burning social problems.

To equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to impact societies, our MSc Economics combines rigorous thinking, empirical evidence, and practical applications in three core courses (microeconomics, macroeconomics, empirical methods) and a selection of over 25 elective courses from our programme and other master’s programmes. You will study state-of-the-art research articles and learn about the important modern tools economists use. Based on the empirical evidence that you analyze, you will be able to come up with policy recommendations and apply economic thinking to societal problems and policy dilemmas. Upon finishing your degree, you can write clear policy reports with well-informed analyses and solutions, deeply rooted in the relevant economics literature and backed by data.

You can design your own study program in the General Economics Profile or specialize further in one of two topical profiles:

General Economics Profile - in this profile you have maximum flexibility to shape your study program. You can concentrate on finance and banking, energy, trade, growth, health, development finance & economics, or data analysis. Or you can mix and match courses according to your own interests.
Monetary Policy - you will delve into this crucial topic in the current economic debate. You will engage with topics such as risk-taking at banks, inflation, and financial crises, and you will learn about different economic schools of thought in the realms of monetary policy.
Market Competition and Regulation - you will take up the lively and challenging debate of recent decades by exploring the literature and practice of competition and regulation through topics like market power, mergers, vertical restraints, abuse of dominant position, monopolization, and Big Tech platforms.

Our popular Economic Policy Workshop gives you a unique opportunity to dive into topics such as entrepreneurship, gender, employment and labor markets, fiscal policy, ethics, responsibility, and sustainability. It focuses on formulating policy advice based on the latest insights from economic research.
Get equipped to join the current debate in our Monetary Policy profile, which is built on our long and rich experience in the field. We are one of two universities offering this specialization and we have strong linkages with policymakers and practitioners, with input from renowned alumni like Klaas Knot, president of the Dutch Central Bank, or courses being taught by Lex Hoogduin, the former vice-president of the Dutch Central Bank.

Programme

You start the programme by taking courses that provide you with a solid understanding of economic theory, empirical analysis, and policy recommendations. You will delve into topics such as competition policy, energy markets, household behavior, economic growth - also from a historical perspective, inflation, unemployment, fiscal and monetary policy, and the dynamics of international trade. You are being trained to use quantitative methods for analyzing economic data and testing economic theories. Last but not least, you examine the role of economic policy in addressing societal challenges such as family policies, social security and savings for retirement, climate change and the social costs of carbon, social norms, and monetary policy rules. You can choose to follow the fully flexible General Economics Profile or specialize in one of the two topical profiles:

General Economics Profile - in this profile, you have maximum flexibility to shape your study program. You can concentrate on specific topics or mix-and-match courses according to your own interests.

Monetary Policy Profile - you will delve into this crucial topic in the current economic debate. You will engage with subjects like risk-taking at banks, inflation, and financial crises. And, among other things, analyze the role of money and banks from three theoretical perspectives.

Market Competition and Regulation Profile - we look at economic theory and real-life questions such as, to what extent does the design of energy markets need to be changed because of the transition to renewable energy sources like wind and solar? How to give incentives to energy producers and consumers to reduce carbon emissions? And how to regulate or break up Big Tech firms hindering competition?

You will finish the programme by writing your MSc thesis on a subject within the profile you have chosen.

Double Degree Master Economic Analysis (Santiago) (specialization) Study economics and economic analysis in Groningen and Santiago and learn to use groundbreaking theoretical knowledge and apply it to help solve the challenges of emerging economies. Through this double degree master's with Universidad de Chile in Santiago, you will obtain a thorough understanding of the economies, economic policies, strategies, thoughts, and practices of Europe and Latin America. This programme is designed for students who wish to add a comparative perspective to their understanding of key economic issues. What’s more, you will have the chance to study in two distinct cultural contexts and obtain two degrees in only 18 months. Job prospects

As a graduate, you will be able to apply advanced economic theory and data analysis to understand economic issues related to society at large. The programme trains you for positions in which you can contribute as an economist to decision-making in (inter)national government bodies, public organizations, and the private sector. Think, for example, of private corporations, financial institutions, multinationals, and consultancy firms. You can also work as a researcher in business or with a governmental agency, or use your expertise for journalistic or educational goals.

My Master´s programme itself and the good reputation of the University of Groningen made me decide to study Economics here. At times some econometrics can be quite challenging in this programme. The only thing you can do is to invest a lot of time until you understand it. However, the university offers a lot of support. For example, the FEB Career Services can always help you plan your next step. I would like to work for the government and influence policy decisions in the future.
