Open Modules

Faculty of Arts 2025-2026

Every programme of the Faculty of Arts offers modules for non-registered students. A list of these modules can be found on Ocasys (note: the modules for 2025-2026 will be available in June 2025). This list includes information about the semester in which the courses are taught.

Please note: the Open Modules offered by the Faculty of Arts only concern Bachelor's degree programmes.

Prerequisites

A diploma of pre-university education or a propedeutic degree of a university of applied sciences is required to the open modules. There may be additional entry requirements, e.g. fulfilment of another module. These requirements apply to open module participants as well. Degree students of a Dutch university or university of applied sciences may enrol in these modules as electives, without paying course fees.

Application

  • Complete the debit authorization form
  • Sign the debit authorization form (with an ink signature or digitally signed signature)
  • Complete the the digital enrolment form
  • Upload the debit authorization form and a copy of your ID in the enrolment form
  • As soon as the form has been received, the Faculty of Arts will check whether you can be admitted and when you can start
  • You will be registered as soon as you are admitted
  • When the course fee has been paid, you will receive your student card

Please note: The Faculty of Arts reserves the right to cancel modules and/or to deny participation to applicants. In such cases course fees will be refunded.

Payment and cancellation

Course fees

Course fees depend on the number of ECTS of the courses. In the academic year 2025-2026 the prices are:

  • € 1.125,- for a 5 ECTS course
  • € 2.250,- for a 10 ECTS course

If the study load of a specific course deviates from this, please contact the Office for Student Affairs.

Payment

The course fees will be paid to the University of Groningen by means of a mandate for direct debit. You authorize the university to debit your account by filling in your bank account number on the debit authorization form and signing it. This is the only way to pay.

Student Information & Administration takes care of collecting the course fees. They will also send you your student card.

Cancellation

If a course is cancelled by the university, the course fees will be refunded without any additional costs.
If a student withdraws from a course at least one working day before the start, the course fees will be refunded minus an administration fee of € 8,-.
If a student drops out after the semester or block has started, there will be no refund.

Course duration

Duration of the course

Unless stated otherwise, the duration of a module is 10 or 20 weeks, including an examination period. In general, lectures are in daytime.
The exam period is every last 3 weeks of every block (half semester). Resits are in the exam period of the next block. Resits of semester 2b are immediately after the regular exams of 2b.

Level and study load

Level, study load, admission and language

Every course has a code (e.g. LEL001B05). The last 3 digits indicate the level and studyload: the letter for the level, and the digits for the number of ECTS.

  • P = Introductory courses (1st year)
  • B = Bachelor courses (2nd and 3rd year)
  • M = Master courses (4th year)

The student workload is measured in ECTS, the European Credit Transfer System. This system is related to the workload of the average number of hours needed to fulfil a module (class hours included). 1 ECTS equals a studyload of 28 hours.

To be admitted participants must have a diploma of pre-university education or a propedeutic degree of a university of applied sciences. Unless stated otherwise, the courses are taught in Dutch. Please bear in mind that compulsory literature can be in Dutch but can also include material in English, German or French.
Open modules students participate fully in the regular programme which is why we expect them to demonstrate a self-reliant attitude towards study.
