Why Classical, Medieval and Early Modern Studies?

I have chosen to apply for the Research Master 'Classical, Medieval and Early Modern Studies' because I found out during my Bachelor degree in History that carrying out research gave me a great sense of satisfaction.

Excursions

I am currently in the first year and so far, the Research Master matches my expectations in every possible way. It has a varied programme focused on investigation, it is multidisciplinary, and it offers the opportunity to structure the programme to suit your interest (which is in my case cultural, medieval history). Another great aspect of this Master is that some courses include excursions to other countries. In the beginning of the first semester, for example, we went to Rome which was an amazing experience. During this excursion we stayed at the KNIR (Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut te Rome) and visited a lot of different places accompanied by scholars who could tell us everything we wanted to know. The excursion also gave us the opportunity to experience academic work on site in the form of a presentation in front of a certain monument of our own choosing.

Self-study

This Master programme does not have a lot of contact hours. I have, for example, three courses, each 10 ECTS, with seven contact hours in total. However, you have to do a lot of self-study at home. For me this works very well because it gives me the possibility to focus on the things I find most interesting. So if want to develop your scientific skills in a very lively student city, than this Master is something I can highly recommend.
