Horizon 2020-funded Generations and Gender Programme (GGP-EPI) launched in Paris - Coordination by NiDi

The Generations and Gender Programme (GGP), hosted by RUG-partner institute NiDi, marked the launch of the EUR 2 million Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme on Thursday, 26 January 2017 in Paris. The programme aims to ensure long-term sustainability of GGP as a pan-European research infrastructure.

On Thursday, January 26^th 2017, the Generations and Gender Programme (GGP) marked the launch of its new three year project during a kick-off event at INED in Paris. The project, entitled GGP-EPI (Evaluate Plan Initiate) is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation framework (H2020-INFRADEV-2016-2017, Development and long-term sustainability of new pan-European research infrastructures).

The GGP, launched in 2001, is an international, open-source research infrastructure devoted to the study of family dynamics, gender relations, relationships between generations and factors that influence demographic change processes. The programme is coordinated by the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NiDi - an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences) and an affiliate of the University of Groningen (RUG).

Professor of Comparative Family Studies at RUG’s Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences a nd GGP Director Anne Gauthier notes that the three-year programme will “augment the scientific collaboration between RUG and NiDi by providing substance for more joint research and academic activities in social sciences and demography”.

The €2 million Euro grant positions the GGP to pursue two strategic aims. Firstly, the GGP will continue to advance its scientific achievements as an innovative and unique open source research infrastructure for longitudinal and cross-national study of population change processes. Secondly, the research and innovation grant enables the consortium to initiate a transition in the GGP’s governance and financial structures and processes from a network of research institutes to a distributed research infrastructure with a strong Central Hub.

This transition poises the GGP to continue to provide comparable cross-national data, gathered using innovative and cost effective means. These aims will contribute to expanding user uptake thus furthering GGP’s overall societal and policy impact goals. The long term goal is a successful application for inclusion in the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) Roadmap in 2020.
