Each year, between 60,000 and 80,000 people are admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the Netherlands. However, ICU recovery can be challenging, and aftercare is lacking. This is evident from the research of Lise Beumeler, a researcher at the RUG/Campus Fryslân and the Leeuwarden Medical Center, on which she will receive her doctorate on March 9 in Leeuwarden. Beumeler looked at which patients are at risk for long-term health problems and also how they can recover in a meaningful way. This included examining the role of nutrition and the possibilities of Virtual Reality.
