You are cordially invited to attend the Opening of the Academic Year 2023-2024 on Tuesday 5 September 2023.  This year, the academic procession will start at 3.30 p.m. from the Town hall to the Beurs where the walk-in at the Beurs starts at 3.15 to be followed by the official programme at 3.45.

Gemma Frisius Lecture: On the relevance of a new Lingua Franca in inter- and transdisciplinary science

To celebrate the Opening of the Academic Year we have invited prof. Christiaan Boerma to give this year's Gemma Frisius keynote lecture on the relevance of a new Lingua Franca in inter- and transdisciplinary science. In the days of Gemma Frisius (1508-1555), scholars participated in various disciplines of science. In an already international scientific community Latin was the common language. Today, communication in inter- and transdisciplinary science comes with many challenges. Are English and social media the modern substitution for the historic Lingua Franca? Or is there more to it?

Professor Christiaan Boerma was trained as a medical doctor in Intensive Care medicine. He currently works as dean of the MCL Academy at the Medical Centre Leeuwarden. As a professor of meaningful preventive care at the Campus Fryslân of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen he reflects on the gap between evidence-based medicine and clinical practice, and strives to connect cure and prevention.

Welcome and introduction is by professor Caspar van den Berg.
Besides the keynote we will hear from our student assessor Chiara Matarazzo, and from the Faculty Council, accompanied by musical interludes by our very own students. The ceremony will be followed by a reception at 4.30.
