Participation in decision-making

Employees and students of the University of Groningen have the right to vote and are eligible for election to the University Council, to your faculty council or to your departmental council.

The right to vote

On the basis of the Higher Education and Academic Research Act (WHW) and the electoral regulations for employees and students of the University of Groningen you have the right to vote and are eligible for election to the University Council, to your faculty council or to your departmental council. Employees of the Dutch organisation for Academic Research (NWO) and comparable organisations working at the University of Groningen may vote or be elected as well.

Membership

One half of he University Council and the faculty councils consists of employees, the other half are students. Members of the University Council and the faculty councils are elected by and from within the section they belong to: personnel or students of the University of Groningen. Employees are elected for a period of two years, students for one year.  

Representative advisory bodies

Four of the University of Groningen departments have departmental councils (the University Office, the University Library, the Computing Centre and the Facility Management Department). Departmental councils solely consist of members of staff who are elected by and from employees who work in the unit concerned. The Nuclear Physics Accelerator Institute (KVI) has an employees’ council.

The representative advisory bodies were established for personnel and students. By being a candidate for election you can become a member of one of the above-mentioned councils and raise matters which concern you or your colleagues.

If you are interested in the work of one of these councils please contact the chairperson or secretary of the council concerned. Information on elections can be obtained from the Central Polling Committee, tel. 5304.
