On Friday the 7th of March 2014 dr. Noeleen Heyzer, the Under Secretary General of the United Nations, will receive the Aletta Jacobs Prize for her work on women emancipation.
The Aletta Jacobs Prize is a biannual prize that is handed out by the Rijkuniversiteit Groningen to someone who has significantly contributed to woman’s emancipation. The prize gets its name from the first female student at the University and the first female doctor in the Netherlands, Aletta Jacobs (1854-1929). This year, the prize winner will be dr. Noeleen Heyzer, Under Secretary General of the United Nations. Over the years, dr. Noeleen Heyzer has played an important role in various international issues concerning equal rights for man and women.
On Thursday the 6th of March 2014, the evening before the prize-giving ceremony, a College Tour-like event will be organized in dr. Noeleen Heyzer’s honour. We probably all know the concept of the Dutch television show College Tour: a special guest with an interesting story to tell is interviewed both by the host and the audience. The audience consists of students, who get the chance to ask their burning questions. At the RUG College Tour event, prof.dr.ir. Thea Hilhorst will be the host, interviewing dr. Noeleen Heyzer. Prof.dr.ir. Thea Hilhorst is a rural development sociologist specialized in natural disasters, conflict and humanitarian aid at Wageningen University. Because of her background and familiarity with the topics of the evening, she will be able to ask dr. Noeleen Heyzer the right questions.
