Union Month

September and October 2024 are Union Months: a period in which you can get to know the three unions within the RUG through interesting informative activities. And there's a bonus: if you become a member of one of the unions in September (or October), the employer will give you a one-time contribution of 100.00 euros on your membership for the first year. So that's a nice discount on your membership!

Look out for more information about upcoming activities, including several informative meetings about how you can improve your working conditions as a member of a union. There will be sessions for new employees and potential members, as well as strategic sessions for current members about how we can fight budget cuts together. And union representatives will be visiting the faculties/departments to connect with you on current topics such as work pressure, social safety and the impending cuts caused by the new government policy.

Activities during Union Month

October 10 - The unions are coming to you - Zernike
Can’t make it to a meeting? Today the unions make the rounds.  Stop by the information booth at three different locations at the Zernike Campus. Come meet your union reps and fellow union members, get important information, and ask your questions. Trained union consultants will be on hand  to provide advice on individual work-related matters .

October 15 - Trade Union Drinks
A cozy get-together at a special location: the club building of the Koninklijke Groninger Roeivereniging De Hunze (Praediniussingel 32, 9711 AG Groningen). While enjoying a drink and a snack, get to know each other better.

October 24 - Together against austerity
This is a strategic meeting for all employees to catch up on planned budget cuts within the RUG. In June 2024, 'Organize the RUG' organized a very well-attended meeting in cooperation with the unions to talk with each other about the approaching budget cuts. Six months have passed and we are seeing the first effects of changing policies.

We would like to talk with as many colleagues as possible to see where we stand now and how we as employees can best arm ourselves against this together. There will also be a guest speaker from England: (Sol Gamsu, who served three years as UCU branch president) to explain how they took action against planned cuts.
