Dr. Ir. Gerco Onderwater
Name: Gerco Onderwater
Qualifications: PhD in experimental nuclear physics (1998)
What you’ll teach at University College Groningen: Exploring Science and Medical Sciences
Gerco has an applied physics degree from Twente University in Enschede (1993) and a PhD in experimental nuclear physics from the Free University (1998). As a postdoc and later assistant professor (2000) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA) he did several high-precision particle physics experiments. In 2003 he came to Groningen supported by a VIDI grant. Recently (2013) he has started working at the world’s largest particle accelerator at CERN. He has taught physics courses at all levels.
Gerco is exploring the boundaries of applicability of the Standard Model of particle physics, in the hope to unravel the mysteries of the universe at its most fundamental level. By comparing ultra-precise measurements to equally precise theoretical predictions he searches for signatures of new physics.
My favourite food is… Any creamy dessert, with fresh fruits and loads of chocolate!
My favourite place in the world is… In early summer overlooking the wildflower laden slopes of the Buckskin Pass near Aspen, USA.
When I’m not working I’m… Trying to find objects to photograph, in our backyard, out on the street or even better, somewhere on top of a mountain with my head in the clouds.
My inspiration is… The elegance and simplicity of nature, from which an amazingly rich collection of complex structures emerges.
