Dr. Simon Friederich
Name: Simon Friederich
Nationality : German
Qualifications: PhDs in Philosophy and Physics
What you teach at University College Groningen:
I am an assistant professor of Philosophy of Science and I coordinate the Research and Methodology learning line. Courses that I have taught include Statistics and Philosophy of Science. I have worked at UCG since it has been launched in 2014.
I work on many topics in the philosophy of science, in particular in the philosophy of physics, but also in the philosophy of mathematics. I am also interested in epistemology and, more generally, in questions regarding scientific and philosophical methods.
My favourite food is... Vegetarian. I especially like Ethiopian and Italian food.
My favourite thing about Groningen is… The open-mindedness of the people here and the calm, work-friendly atmosphere all over the place.
My favourite place in the world is… I love being in nature, especially in the mountains. But I’m also very fond of the region around Groningen, notably the lovely village of Winsum, where I live.
Something most people don’t know about me is... I'm not only a classical music and prog rock enthusiast but a death metal fan. I love brutal stuff such as that delivered by the likes of Death, Opeth, Gorguts and (in mainstream heavy metal) Judas Priest.
My biggest achievement is...Being a rather stable and sometimes funny person.
When I’m not working I’m busy... Being with my wife and daughters, hiking, playing the piano, reading and thinking about stuff, for instance evolution or energy.
My inspiration is... My wife Andrea in her empathy, honesty, cleverness and the passion in all that she does.
