I was educated at Groningen University where I studied History with a specialisation in Ancient History. I graduated in 1982 and did my doctorate at the same university in 1989. Title thesis: Helena Augusta: Waarheid en Legende. The English edition appeared in 1992: Helena Augusta: The Mother of Constantine the Great and the Legend of Her Finding of the True Cross.

In 1983 I started teaching Ancient History at Groningen University.

During my career I have held many administrative and organizational positions at the university, faculty and department level. For several years (1993-1995) I was a member of the Faculty Board of Letters as portfolio holder for education and internationalization. I have been a member and chair of the History and Classics departmental board several times. Also, from 2028-2023, I was a member and chair of the board of Cluster 5 which includes the programs History, Classics, Archaeology, Modern Near Eastern Studies and American Studies.

Among other things, I have been a member of the Education Committee of the national research school OIKOS and from 2011-2016 I was a member (and chair) of the University Committee on Education (UCO) on behalf of the Faculty of Arts.

2000-2001: Josephus Daniels Fellow at the National Humanities Center, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA

2009: Summer fellow of Dumbarton Oaks, Research Library and Collection, Washington DC.

April 2011: Visiting member of the Centre for the Study of Greek and Roman Antiquity of Corpus Christi College, Oxford.

Spring 2015: DAAD grant for research stay at Georg-August-Universität, Göttingen

December 2017: Visiting Professor at The Center for the Study of Christianity, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem

July 2018: Visiting Associate Professor Macquarie University, Sydney

2019: Summer fellow of Dumbarton Oaks, Research Library and Collection, Washington DC.

Member of the editorial board of  Lampas. Tijdschrift voor Classici (until 2017)

Consulting editor of the Journal of Late Antiquity

Member Advisory Committee "Sidonius Apollonaris for the 21st Century"

2024: Chair review committee of the Radboud Institute for Culture & History, Nijmegen.

I have been guest lecturer at e.g. the universities of Pisa, Kiel, and the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome. I am regularly invited for guestlectures by European and American universities and as keynote speaker at conferences.

I have been a member of the board of the Faculty of Arts (1993-1995) and of the boDuring my career I have held many administrative and organizational positions at the university, faculty and department level.
