Abstract


Our research group is currently building two types of memory DIMM-like form factor compute node boards for the ASTRON/IBM DOME μ Server project. The first type is based on a 4 core 2.2 GHz SoC while the second type is built on a 12 core / 24 thread 1.8 GHz SoC. Both boards employ the 64-bit power instruction set. We use innovative hot-water based cooling infrastructure to supply electrical power to the compute node boards. In this presentation, I will present the current status of the project, performance results, and future. I will conclude with the key lessons learned so far.

Ronald P. Luijten, senior IEEE member, currently manages the IBM DOME uServer and Algorithms and Machines teams. Ronald’s personal research interests lie in data center architecture, design and performance (‘Data Motion in Data Centers’). He holds more than 25 issued patents, and has co-organized seven IEEE conferences. Over the years, IBM has awarded Ronald with three outstanding technical achievement awards and a corporate patent award.

Abstract


Research communities from different disciplines have different ambitions and approaches, particularly when talking about data organization and content. However, they all have a pool of common basic data service requirements. EUDAT offers a set of common data services, designed to support multiple research communities as well as individuals, through a geographically distributed, resilient network connecting general purpose data centres and community-specific data repositories. These shared services and storage resources are distributed across 15 European nations and data is stored alongside some of Europe’s most powerful supercomputers. EUDAT is a user-driven, service-oriented, trusted, secure and sustainable data infrastructure that offers solutions for finding, sharing, storing, replicating, staging and performing computations with primary and secondary research data. Community-specific data repository managers can join the data infrastructure to archive, replicate, process and catalogue data on behalf of their community. Additionally, researchers (from academia and industry), citizen scientists, policy makers, and members of the public can share, discover and re-use data via EUDAT.

Mark van de Sanden is the team leader of the Data Services Group at SURFsara, the Dutch national HPC center. After receiving his BSc in computer engineering from the technical college ’s-Hertogenbosch in 1994, he started working at the National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR). He  joined SARA, former SURFsara, in 1997, as a system programmer to work on supercomputing technology and by early 2000 he became more involved in mass storage infrastructure. In 2006, he became the team leader of the Data Services Group. He is currently working as a system architect and an expert on large scale data infrastructures for a variety of projects including the WLCG project for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), LOFAR Long-term archive, PRACE Data Challenges and EUDAT. In EUDAT, he is currently coordinating the service building activities.

Abstract


Information visualization concerns the use of interactive computer graphics to obtain insight in large amounts of abstract data. Typical examples of such abstract data include multivariate datasets (tables), hierarchical datasets or networks. In practice, more often than not, we have to deal with some kind of a combinations of these, adding another layer of complexity. Since information visualization deals with very generic data, its principles and techniques can be used in a wide range of societal, business, technical, and scientific applications.

The visualization group at the Eindhoven University of Technology has been active in the field of information visualization since 1998. In this talk, I will give an overview of the field, using cases and demos from our group as examples. I will focus on the lessons we have learned, the most important one being that inspiration for effective solutions often comes from many directions.

Jack van Wijk is a full professor in visualization at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He received his MSc degree in industrial design engineering in 1982 and a PhD degree in computer science in 1986, both from Delft University of Technology. He joined Eindhoven University of Technology in 1998, where he became a full professor of visualization in 2001.

Prof. van Wijk’s main research interests include information visualization, visual analytics, and mathematical visualization. He is a co-founder and VP Scientific Affairs of MagnaView BV. He has been a paper co-chair for IEEE Visualization, IEEE InfoVis, IEEE VAST, IEEE PacificVis and EG/IEEE EuroVis. He has received Technical Achievement Awards from IEEE VGTC and Eurographics.

Abstract


Modern software systems consist of tens of thousands of files covering millions of lines of code, maintained by hundreds of developers over several years. Software maintenance demands increasingly large amounts of time and resources in the software industry. For modern systems, this can exceed 80% of the costs of the entire software lifecycle. Roughly half of this effort is spent in understanding the structure, quality, behavior, and evolution attributes of the involved software artifacts.

In this talk, I will present several novel techniques and tools that aid software-industry stakeholders in efficiently and effectively getting insight in their large code bases. The commonality of the presented solutions is the utilization of multiscale space-filling visualization techniques, which allow users to quickly isolate and analyze items of importance from very large software datasets. We illustrate our techniques by several applications on real-world software maintenance problems in the IT industry.

Short bio


Prof. Alexandru C. Telea obtained his PhD in data visualization from the Eindhoven University of Technology in 2000. He worked at the same university as an assistant professor in visualization and computer graphics until 2007. The same year he joined the Scientific Visualization and Computer Graphics  group at the Institute Johann Bernoulli at the University of Groningen as an adjunct professor. Since 2012, he has been appointed a full professor in multiscale visual analytics. His research interests cover data and information visualization, visual software analytics, and multiscale shape processing.

Prof. Telea is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery and Eurographics. He has also co-chaired several key visualization conferences (ACM SOFTVIS, IEEE VISSOFT and IEEE EuroVis).

Abstract


In this talk I will present an IT research infrastructure for supporting large neuroimaging studies.  This system allows for the automatic and standardized extraction and storage of information on brain anatomy, function, connectivity, and pathology (quantitative imaging biomarkers). I will describe the workflow approach that is implemented for automatic analyses and discuss how image data and metadata is shared among stakeholders.

The infrastructure is currently supporting the fully automated analysis of the Rotterdam Scan Study (> 10.000 MRI data). A main research aim of this study is the early and differential diagnosis of neurodegenerative disease by determining which MR derived findings are of clinical relevance. A key capability of the system is that researchers/medical specialists can compare results for an individual subject to reference data obtained from the Rotterdam Study, correcting for sex, age, and other metadata. I present the key algorithms to achieve this. In addition, I will address some of the challenges and the potential of integrated analysis of imaging and genetic data in dementia diagnosis.

Wiro Niessen is jointly a full professor in Biomedical Image Analysis at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam and the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the Delft University of Technology. At the Erasmus MC, he leads the Biomedical Imaging Group Rotterdam. His research interests comprise many aspects of computer vision, (medical) image analysis and image guided interventions.
Prof. Niessen is also the director of the Biomedical Image Analysis Platform of the European Institute of Biomedical Imaging Research, and one of the founders of the Netherlands Forum for Biomedical Imaging. He currently serves as the associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging and Elsevier's Medical Image Analysis.
