Opening Symposium: Data Science & System Complexity

Date: June 11, 2015

Place: Duisenberg building Room:5412.0020, Zernike campus of the RUG

Time: 13:00 - 18:00

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has identified Data Science and Systems Complexity as a core research theme. Close to 60 prominent senior researchers in a number of basic disciplines (mathematics, astronomy, computer science, artificial intelligence, systems & control) and scientific application domains (genomics, pharmacology, instrumentation) are involved in this research theme. As a result, a Centre for Data Science & Complexity (CDSC) will be established. The center presents its Opening Symposium on 11 June 2015. Target coordinator Prof. Edwin Valentijn will present the Target approach of data federations at the symposium

Big Data Knowledge Cafe

Date: September 25, 2014

Place: Infoversum, Groningen

Time: 17:00 - 18:30

Target and the Studium Generale Groningen are jointly organizing a knowledge cafe that will focus on the topic of Big Data. This term is being ubiquitously used whenever future progress in science, commerce, health, societal well-being and even political stability are being discussed. A panel of three experts from Target and Target partner institutions will shed more light on what Big Data really means and how it can impact the scientists trying to find the nature of dark matter, the young entrepreneur venturing into the business of highly-customizable products, the policy maker who works on devising policies for sustainable development that can curb climate change, the doctor researching factors that influence healthy aging, and you.

Big Data is not a fancy trend, nor is it a magical stick that will solve humanity's problems. Big Data hides vast potential for change, but equally vast challenges lie ahead in learning how to harness and release that potential when and where needed.

PANEL MEMBERS

  • Prof. Edwin Valentijn, Target coordinator and founder of the Infoversum, Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, University of Groningen
  • Rick Koopmans, Deep Computing Specialists, IBM Netherlands
  • Chris Broekema, Computer Scientists, ASTRON (Netherlands Research for Radio Astronomy)
