Healthy Ageing
One of the key points of research at the University of Groningen is healthy aging. The University of Groningen believes it is very important that we not only grow older, but that we also do this in good health and we are committed to this. Leading in this are the Aletta Jacobs school of public health and the associated research centers.

Great support because of 'divedoatie' and joint feeling
In everything I do, I try to keep an eye on the other person. I find it important to be meaningful to the people around me.
At the centre of the old main field, we decided to set up a ‘Social Village Corporation’, which would be used to make healthcare more local and personal [...] A place of positivity in the middle of an environment that has to endure it’s own difficulties.
The support in and around the village is great. Not only because we take care of each other, but especially because there is again, as we call it in the local Gronings dialect ‘divedoatie’, which means buzz. The joint feeling prevails again.

Improving health by improving cities
I am now working on Paddepoel, a typical post-war residential zone that has always been inferior in the area of health compared to other neighbourhoods.
This has to do with car-dependence and the fact that these kind of neighbourhoods are food desserts where you can hardly buy healthy food. [...] However, the biggest problem in Paddepoel is mobility. People don’t walk much in Paddepoel because there is not much to walk to and they see all the streets they have to walk through as barriers.

Mental health and economics
'People are sometimes surprised that I study mental health as an economist, but both mental health and economics are all around us in our daily lives.

Children who exercise in the classroom perform better

Less sitting in the classroom will sound pretty good to many primary school students. If it is up to Esther Hartman, associate professor and researcher at the Center for Human Movement Sciences, this will become the norm in the Netherlands. Jumping during the math lesson and jogging during language lessons helps children to learn better.
Hartman concludes this on the basis of three years of research into the development of children in primary education. Movement during the lessons ensures that students can concentrate better and makes children more fit.
