GIS on your Mac
For using GIS on your Mac there are two simple options: Either use a different GIS package like Quantum GIS (QGIS) or use ArcGIS via the online University Workplace. You could also install ArcGIS on a windows partition (bootcamp) or a virtual machine on your mac, but we will not discuss that here.
The Geo Services offer support for both ways of using GIS on your Mac. For help, you can send us an email at email@example.com
Quantum GIS is an excellent open source and free GIS package which has similar capabilities to ArcGIS. QGIS has a lot of useful plugins that add functionality.
Installing QGIS requires the GDAL framework and some python modules. This website provides everything you need to install QGIS on your Mac.
ArcGIS on the University Workplace
On uwp.rug.nl you can login with your S or P account and use all the University's applications. It even works on a tablet! More information about the use of the University Workplace can be found at the Servicedesk website.
