Virtual Reality Pienza

With a group of students, from both Architectural History and Computer Science, a Virtual reconstruction of the main square of the town of Pienza was made. Kostof writes about this square, “The schematic reproduction of a perspective box so simulated might account for the identification of the type with the Italian Renaissance”. [Kostof 1992, p.149] But we could only test if Rosselino actually did create a perspective box if we are standing outside the box, and here we have the problem, since we cannot test “the box” as it is surrounded by buildings, and the streets leading to the square restricts us from viewing the square from the correct angle.

With the use of a VR-model we can place ourselves anywhere in the town. We have the ability to remove buildings in order to create a good view of the square and the façade of the church. In this way we can study the lay-out of the city in a way that is not possible if we were present at the site, plus we can use the electronic tape measure to calculate the space. But more important we can see what would have happened with the square (and the related perspective) the moment we move a building in such a way that the trapezoid becomes a rectangle. Architectural historians have pondered about the many “what if” questions that can be asked about this square. By taking the square into a VR-environment we can experience the answers in a very direct way.
