Teaching
At the bachelor’s level, the Ancient History staff in Groningen teach in the degree programmes History and Greek and Latin Language and Culture (GLTC). The teaching in the second and third year of the BA in History is thematically structured. Within this framework, there is a diverse, annually changing, and appealing selection of Ancient History course topics. Examples of courses offered by Groningen ancient historians within the BA in History include the Athenian democracy, ancient Persia and the Mediterranean world, ancient colonisation, religion in Hellenistic and Roman Greece, Roman urban networks, and slaves in Roman households.
It is possible to specialise in Ancient History already at the bachelor’s level, for example by writing your bachelor’s thesis on an Ancient History topic.
At the master’s level, Ancient History is part of the master’s programme in Classics and Ancient Civilisations and the History master’s programme. Within these programmes, the Ancient History department offers research seminars, and you can further specialise by taking interdisciplinary courses, for example on epigraphy and archaeology.
Within the two-year Research Master’s programme Classical, Medieval and Early Modern Studies (CMEMS), you can choose to specialise in Ancient History. The Ancient History track within CMEMS offers excellent opportunities to tailor the programme to your own interests and preferences. For example, you can follow subject-specific tutorials with a lecturer of your choice. A longer stay at a foreign university is also among the possibilities.
There are various opportunities to pursue a PhD in Groningen on a topic related to Ancient History. For current PhD students and the expertise of the staff members, see here.
