SPRAAKLAB at Noorderzon 2021

09 September 2021

In August 2021, the team of Speech Lab Groningen (including several members of the Computational Linguistics group) was able to do some outreach after a long period of sitting behind their desks. This also marked the official public launch of the SPRAAKLAB mobile laboratory, which could be used for outreach and speech experiments for the very first time.

The team carried out numerous activities: from doing ultrasound tongue imaging demos for children (try speaking without moving your tongue!) to reaching out to dialect speakers with a quiz that guesses where you are from and an app for learning Gronings. SLG also carried out experiments in the SPRAAKLAB itself and successfully tested more than 70 people in the span of five Noorderzon days. SPRAAKLAB activities will continue in October, with a range of outreach events for kids.
