About us Faculty of Law English-taught programmes LLM programmes 2026/27 Advanced European Union Law

Special features of the programme

In addition to providing high-level knowledge in all core areas of EU law, the courses in this programme focus on legal skills that are essential for modern-day EU law experts. This includes academic skills such as researching and writing an academic article in the Seminar Researching Current Challenges to the European Union. Extensive attention is also given to practice-oriented skills, such as (re)designing legal rules and writing and presenting legal memoranda.

Among the Law in Practice module options for this LLM is the Advanced EU Law Clinic. In this module, students advise real-life public and private sector clients on their EU law-related challenges. Clients include the Dutch Council for Refugees, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets, and international law firm CMS. The module features client visits, during which you will present your findings while gaining insight into different working environments and organisational cultures.

The programme also includes multiple guest lectures by renowned EU lawyers, including members of the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Courses in this LLM programme are taught in small groups and in an active learning environment. Through a strong focus on collaboration and problem-solving, and by drawing on the unique backgrounds and skills of all students, you will develop and refine high-level competences in EU law. Responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is explicitly addressed in some courses.

The teaching team consists of specialists in the field with extensive national and international networks in academia and legal practice. For students interested in research, the programme offers opportunities to collaborate closely with the teaching team in the context of a research internship.

The Academic Director of the programme is Prof. Justin Lindeboom. You can learn more about his research in the video below.
