Global & Intercultural Engagement Distinction

We all live, work and study in an increasingly global and interconnected world. Internationalisation and employability are key elements in the University of Groningen Strategic Plan. What does this mean to you? How can you benefit from these strategic plan elements?

Amongst other things, the UG Language & Culture Policy of the University of Groningen wants to offer you the possibility to complete an extracurricular Global & Intercultural Engagement Distinction (GIED), so you can increase your language and intercultural skills, and your labour market value. The Faculty of Law is the first to run this distinction within the University of Groningen. Read the information here presented and see if you feel attracted and can benefit from this option offered.

General set-up
The Global & Intercultural Engagement Distinction (GIED) consists of the following five categories:

  1. Category 1: intercultural competence course (6 ECTS);
  2. Category 2: international or intercultural courses (6 ECTS);
  3. Category 3: international or intercultural work experience/internship (6 ECTS);
  4. Category 4: foreign language learning and proficiency (6 ECTS);
  5. Category 5: international study (6 ECTS).

You need to complete all categories (30 ECTS) in order to fulfil the learning outcomes of the GIED and thus have it mentioned on your diploma supplement. The way you fill in the separate categories is subject to approval by the Board of Examiners of the Faculty of Law. Please be aware that 1 ECTS stands for 28 hours of work, so each category should be worth 168 hours.
Please be aware that you can only start GIED after you have received a positive BSA.

How to enrol
Once you have decided to participate in GIED, you can enrol in the workshop (category 1) in Progress. The workshop is offered each block and can be found under the course enrolments; it will be named 'GIED block X'. Please make sure to enrol in time, because there is only limited capacity each block.

Graduating with GIED
You can only graduate with GIED on your degree certificate if you have completed all five categories. If you decide not to complete GIED, please inform the International Office immediately (LLB rug.nl). Passed categories can, in some cases, be changed to regular courses to be added to your list as extracurricular courses. Others, and especially exemptions, cannot be added to your list, not even as extracurricular courses. If you would like to have categories to be changed in the system, you need to make a request to the Board of Examiners (BoE-Law rug.nl).

Although care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of all information, there may be unintended errors and changes. The matters covered by this publication on the webpages are subject to change from time to time.
