The MSc TOM prepared me for real-world challenges in operations (Lucas Krol)

While my Bachelor's in Econometrics and Operations Research provided valuable quantitative methods, I realized there was much more to learn in the field of operations from a practical perspective. As such, I decided to follow TOM next to my master's in Econometrics. I like to program and therefore I was glad this is an integral part of the study, with a strong kick-off with the DAPOM course, which was one of my favourite courses. This course introduced me to Python, a language that complemented my previous experience with R, and helped enhance my programming adaptability and industry readiness.

What I appreciated the most about the TOM program is the practical point of view, reflected in for instance the assignments we got, which were often in collaboration with a company or based on real-life datasets. This helps bridge the gap with the work field and makes me feel better prepared for my future career. Furthermore, TOM has really expanded my network, since there are people from all kinds of studies, WO and HBO alike, who decide to follow this program. Getting to know them via the study association, TEMA, or during lectures has made my study experience even more pleasant.

The MSc TOM gave me the perfect mix of practical experience, programming skills and insights into digital transformations (Wiepkje van Dijk)

After completing my bachelor’s in International Business at the University of Groningen, I was looking for a more practical approach to studying. That is why I chose the MSc Technology and Operations Management (TOM) programme at FEB. The combination of programming, designing, and the ability to choose electives that matched my interests really appealed to me. Although I had no prior experience with programming, I was able to keep up and pass all the required courses, indicating that programming experience is not a necessity for TOM. The programme also provided valuable insights into digital transformation, which I believe is crucial for future job opportunities.

One of the highlights of the programme for me was the course Operations Modelling & Simulation. It brought theory and practice together by allowing us to work in small groups to solve production dilemmas using simulations. Instead of choosing a specific focus area, I decided to do a master internship. This was one of the best decisions I made, as it gave me practical experience that I did not have before.

The support from lecturers and teachers throughout the programme was really helpful. They were very approachable and happy to assist, especially during the more practical sessions for courses like Data Analytics & Programming and Operations Modelling & Simulation. This made it easier to ask questions and get useful feedback when needed. Besides studying, it’s nice to meet fellow students in a more casual setting. Many students join the study association TEMA, which offers fun activities and a chance to connect with others outside of the classroom.
