Summarizing data into simple patterns
Nowadays, in many fields of research large amounts of data are being collected and analyzed. Often, methods are used to summarize the data into patterns that are easy to interpret. As a researcher, I am interested in studying such methods from a mathematical point of view, and in improving their performance. Hereby, I focus on two issues. First, is a certain summary of patterns unique or do other patterns exist with an equally accurate summary of the data? And second, for certain data, do patterns exist that are a best summary of the data? The latter is not true for all kinds of data.
