The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Team is proud to be one of the units which operates under the Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT).

Our team consists of trainers and project leaders who all work towards celebrating diversity and promoting inclusion and equity at the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE).

To know more about our team and work, see below:

Our Mission

Put simply, the DEI team aspires to “make diversity count” at FSE.

Our main goal is to promote and -wherever possible- to implement inclusive and equitable practices in the teaching and learning initiated by FSE.

On the whole, we try to foster an inclusive community of students and staff at the faculty where each member feels acknowledged, respected and valued and where each feels they belong and can contribute substantially to FSE educational practices.

Our Values

Our team values are:

Empathy
“Together, we can change the world- one random act of kindness at a time” - Ron Hall

Inclusion and equity imply a high level of interest and  care for  our fellow human beings.  As a team, we make a point of trying to understand and listen to all FSE community members;  to discover, cherish and defend their particularities  and to help them have their needs met so they can thrive. By trying to embody care at FSE, we hope we inspire other FSE/ UG community members and encourage them to embed empathy in their teaching practices, at their department, etc..

Passion
“Purpose is the reason you journey. Passion is the fire that lights the way.“  - Anonymous

All our team members have experienced and witnessed the need for diversity, inclusion and equity many times in both their private and professional lives. For that reason and for years now, we have gone at great lengths to show FSE community members how enriching diversity can be and how to make this a reality. Our hope is that our passion inspires other community members to make the teaching and learning initiated by FSE more inclusive, accessible and relatable to all.

Reflection
“Without reflection, we go blindly on our way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful” - Margaret J. Wheatley

Being inclusive presupposes being aware of one’s own biases. In our work and lives, reflection and self-reflection are necessary practices. In our trainings and coaching, we also try to show participants the importance of (self) reflection for them to enhance their awareness and inclusion skills.

Perseverance
“Great difficulties may be surmounted by patience and perseverance” - Abigail Adams

Our team is very aware that change takes time… and effort. And, no matter how small the changes can sometimes seem to be, we will keep putting in the work.
