Diversity Day 2023 We@FSE

In October 2023, the DEI team organized FSE’s very first Diversity Day. Through a range of activities we aimed to showcase and celebrate the diversity of our community. During this event,

  • members of FSE’s community shared their personal stories and experiences,
  • a professional artist sketched portraits of attendees.
  • Visitors could read a ‘living book’ in the living library or
  • Visitors and participants could walk through a photo exhibition.

We@FSE photo exhibition

This project aims at showcasing FSE’s diversity by creating a photo gallery of our community members. Each portrait is accompanied by a quote about their experiences with diversity and inclusion at our faculty.  This project is a continuous project and runs throughout the year.
Here are some examples:

"Everyone can be who they are. It's really true"

"When people don't know who they are looking for, they tend to walk past my office. They are not expecting a male secretary."

The International Classroom Benchmarking project

The IC Benchmarking project was initiated and run by the DEI Team.

The IC Benchmarking project was a strategic education project from FSE, in which the current state of affairs related to the international classroom concepts and principles is assessed. Through a lecturer inventory and student focus groups, the project aimed to get a better sense of the current teaching and learning activities in all the FSE BSc degree programmes and to what extent these support creating an inclusive learning environment.

This project was finalized in June 2023. The results are summarized in this final report.

The Global and Intercultural Engagement Distinction (GIED) project was initiated and run by the DEI Team.

The GIED is a 30 ECTS extracurricular programme which intends to prepare students for work in an international and intercultural (research) team and in an increasingly global workplace. To have the distinction awarded, students must complete five categories which include:

  • an intercultural competence workshop,
  • courses which provide an international or intercultural perspective on their discipline,
  • international or intercultural work experience,
  • foreign language learning,
  • international study.

The GIED has been launched at FSE in April 2023 and will continue to be implemented by DEI (and the Language Centre) as a pilot project until 2025.

Pilots in FSE courses

Since 2022, our team works towards including an intercultural component directly into courses. The goal is to add an intercultural perspective in the course learning outcomes, to train the TAs to identify and/or mediate cultural conflicts and to teach the students how to work in intercultural groups. Inclusion of intercultural perspectives in the course learning outcomes ensures that the diversity of the student population is taken into account in all parts of the course, from course design to assessment. To this day, the team has initiated pilot sessions for courses in Industrial Engineering Management (IEM) and Energy and Environmental Sciences (EES).

Would you be interested in exploring how to implement an intercultural perspective into your course? Please get in touch with us!
