Radical Ideas

A ReMa Winter School: February 3-4, 2022
We have had to move the winterschool online, so unfortunately coffee, lunch and drinks are no longer part of the programme.

The online winter school is aimed at advanced undergraduate (or early graduate) students who are curious about the Research Master in Philosophy at the University of Groningen. There will be six presentations by members of the Faculty of Philosophy on a variety of more or less radical ideas. We will also provide information on our Research Master.

Programme

February 3rd starts with lunch, followed by three presentations:

  • Prof. Bart Streumer defends the radical view that all normative judgements are false but that no one can believe it. He will talk about unbelievable philosophical theories.
  • Prof. Leah Henderson works on conspiracy theories and polarization, among other topics in theoretical philosophy. She will talk about how people get drawn into views that they themselves would previously have regarded as completely radical.
  • Dr. Andrea Sangiacomo works on a radically diverse number of topics, ranging from early modern philosophy to continental philosophy to ancient Buddhist thought. He will discuss centaurs and dragons, Hume, early Buddhism and freedom from aversion.

We will go for drinks and dinner after that to digest some of these radical ideas.

February 4th starts with coffee. There will also be lunch, and three presentations:

  • Prof. Martin Lenz works on medieval and early modern philosophy. He will discuss the radical question whether God can bypass the principle of non-contradiction.
  • Dr. Charlotte Knowles explores Heidegger’s radical work in the context of feminist philosophy. She will discuss why some women are complicit in their own oppression.
  • Dr. Felipe Romero works on the replication crisis in the social sciences, experimental philosophy and the philosophy of cognitive science. He will discuss radical forms of social epistemology.
