Leading economist Thomas Piketty will give a guest lecture at the Faculty of Economics and Business on 23 May, 15.15 – 17.30. The topic will be ‘Rising Inequality and Globalisation’. This event will be streamed live via YouTube, and the hashtag #UGPiketty can be used to ask the speaker questions.
About Piketty
Thomas Piketty is the author of the best-selling book Capital in the Twenty-First Century (2013), which is the result of his path-breaking work on the distribution of wealth over the past 250 years. In a TED talk he summarises his main conclusions: Economic inequality is increasing again, with potentially far-reaching consequences for our society.
In his recent work Piketty continues his research on wealth and income inequality. He is a professor at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS), associate chair at the Paris School of Economics and Centennial professor at the International Inequalities Institute, which is part of the London School of Economics (LSE).
The Maddison Lecture
The Maddison Lecture has hosted a series of leading thinkers on the themes of economic history, growth, and development. It is named in honour of Angus Maddison, who laid the foundations of the discipline in his career at the University of Groningen. Previous speakers include Daron Acemoglu, Nicholas Crafts, Dani Rodrik, and Jeffrey Williamson. This lecture is organised by the Groningen Growth and Development Centre (GGDC), with the support of the Faculty of Economics and Business and the SOM Research School.
