FEB's learning communities are extracurricular activities that give you the opportunity to dive deeper into a topic that has your personal interest or passion, or to gain more insights and relevant skills. Each semester new topics are introduced.

About this Learning Community

The Faculty of Economics and Business, together with FEB's Career Services, offers an interesting excursion in close collaboration with the University of Coimbra (Portugal), learning about Technology, Strategy, Business Culture, International Business and Management, Sustainability and Cultural Differences.

The excursion to the University of Coimbra takes place May 3rd through May 10th, 2020. Preparation meetings, teambuilding sessions in the Netherlands and a(n online) visit to Caetano-Toyota will precede the week of the excursion. See schedule below for exact dates.

The learning process consists of learning new knowledge and skills in class sessions, taking a real case challenge in collaboration with Caetano-Toyota, visits to the local industry, visit the Incubator and Accelerator “Instituto Pedro Nunes” and engagement with entrepreneurs and local leaders.

This learning community focuses on:

  • Acquire academic content on international Strategic Management
  • Learn about entrepreneurship, leadership, business and technology innovation.
  • Learn and understand the Portuguese and Business Culture.
  • Learn sustainability, Energy Management and Ageing.
  • Apply knowledge in business and technology ventures

This trip will also offer social and cultural exploration within the city of Coimbra. Among other, the participants will have the opportunity to participate in the centenary student traditional celebrations – “Queima das Fitas”.

Institute of Systems and Robotics (ISR-UC)
One of the 38 research centers of the University of Coimbra, the Institute of Systems and Robotics promotes advanced multidisciplinary R&D in the areas Mobile Autonomous Robotics, Intelligent Transportation Systems, Search and Rescue Robotics, Robotic Manipulation, Computer Vision, Medical Robotics, Assistive Technologies, Biomedical Engineering, Advanced Industrial Automation Technologies and Intelligent Energy Systems. ISR-UC gives special attention to international scientific research cooperation with centers of excellence, as well as to training and education Initiatives. ISR was founded in 1992 with the global purpose of setting up a first-class multi-disciplinary research team, able to carry out leading-edge research in several important areas of science and technology, with a special emphasis in systems and robotics. ISR has also developed strong links with industry, either existing national and international companies or promoting the creation of spin-offs.

Universidade de Coimbra - UC
The University of Coimbra is the oldest in Portugal and one of the oldest in the world having been created in the thirteenth century, in 1290, with the document "Scientiae thesaurus mirabilis" signed by King Dinis. The Bull "De statu regni Portugaliae" of Pope Nicholas IV, dated August 9, 1290, acknowledges the “General Studies (Estudo Geral)”. The University established in Coimbra and later in Lisbon and Coimbra again, until the year 1537 when it has definitely established in the latter city.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC)
The University of Coimbra also works as a fundamental mechanism at the level of entrepreneurship and enterprise development, especially in technological areas of IT by connecting research with the market, stimulating distinct types of partnerships with companies. Some examples of innovation at the University of Coimbra are cars that do not need a driver or that are capable of traveling miles and miles spending little quantities of fuel, robots that obey to orders given by the human voice or help astronauts performing their tasks, or of revolutionary methods for the treatment of several diseases.

At the core of these innovations is the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC).

Institute Pedro Nunes
IPN offers different services to startups. As IPN promotes innovation establishing the link between the scientific sector and companies, they support entrepreneurs from day one in the business incubator.
Besides IPN incubator, the institute has six applied R&D labs that support product development in different technology areas, mainly ICT, Electronics, Automation and Materials.

Queima das Fitas
During the trip in May 2020, the university city of Coimbra will host the emblematic students’ feast “Queima das Fitas”. An exceptional opportunity to visit the city of students and witness a unique tradition!

There are plenty other and diverse music, arts and tradition events going on.

Application process

The learning community has place for maximum of 10 students . A minimum of 6 students is required for the learning community to go through.
The selection criteria considers individual academic performance and motivation to personal and professional development, interest in Technology and International Business Strategy and Management.
The students are from the FEB and DEEC, but depending on the project other students will join from other faculties from both universities.

You are welcome to attend an information session about this Learning Community. Day, time and location will be announced here, after the holiday break. Drs. Paulo Morgado will be available for questions and will provide any other information you may need to decide whether to participate in this Learning Community.

Practical information

Schedule and Time Investment

The schedule consist of time spend in the Netherlands and in Portugal:

PROGRAM IN GRONINGEN, THE NETHERLANDS (from April 24 to April 27 2020):
  • April 23rd: Students from University of Coimbra travel to the Netherlands.
  • April 24th: Students of Coimbra will join the Groningen students. Workshop to develop answers to the Toyota challenge.
  • April 25th and April 26th: All participants visit Groningen/Netherlands.
  • April 27th: Kings Day, National Celebrations. Coimbra students travel to back to Portugal.

PROGRAM IN COIMBRA, PORTUGAL (from May 3rd to May 10th 2020):

  • May 3rd (at the latest): FEB students travel from the Netherlands to Porto (if arrival is before May 3rd, sleeping arrangements are at own expenses)
  • May 4th: Visit Toyota, Gaia/Poro
  • May 5th: Class lecturers (2x 1,5 hours)
  • May 6th: Class lecturers (2x 1,5 hours) ISR
  • May 7th: Company visit (IPN)
  • May 8th - 9th - 10th: Cultural events / Qeuima
  • May 10th/11th: FEB students travel back to Groningen

Costs, Transport and Accomodation:

  • Returnticket and transportation costs from and to airport: approx. 250 euros per person (at own expense)
  • A participation fee (non-refundable) of 100 euro's (Non-RUG 200 euro's) that needs to be paid after you are selected to join the learning community.
  • Consumptions during the week: meals, snacks etc. are at own expenses
  • Transportation during the week: organised by University of Coimbra, no additional costs
  • Accommodation: available on Campus in Coimbra, no additional costs
