CPS course "My Future Career"

Introduction

I'm not sure whether I want to stay in academia. What other options do I have? How can I make the most of my doctorate degree? How do I make a sensible choice for my future career?

If these questions sound familiar to you, this might be the training course to attend. This training course is aimed at bringing clarity to career development for academics in their early career. The Graduate Schools offer this course, which is part of the Career Perspective Series.

This is a training for everyone who faces the difficulty of making an informed choice for the next step in their career. The training is designed by experts of the University of Groningen Human Resources department in collaboration with the Groningen Graduate Schools.

Aim

The training aims to make PhD students become aware of their personal interests and competencies and how these can lead them to making a dedicated choice for either a career inside or outside academia. The training is divided in three parts, that are intertwined, so you need to be present every day. Every session needs approximately two hours preparatory work.

- You will have insight into personal and career goals
- You will learn more about the labor market inside and outside academia
- You will be able to make a more informed choice for your next step
- You will enhance your practical career skills (in a global world)
- You will be able to formulate a personal career plan

Intended for

PhD-students in their 3rd or 4th year

Competences
Self-reflection, initiative, networking skills, communication.
Content

This course emphasizes your strengths and possibilities in taking your next career step. You will be provided with a motivating process for exploring career needs, focusing on current position, desired destination and unique personal resources (subjects of interest, skills, values, network). After these two days you will have your own personal career development plan. But more importantly, you will be able to act on that plan and to take your career towards the next level.

Day 1: how to describe yourself and your talents to others - about criteria that are important to you. Includes a test and feedback.

Day 2: what makes you tick - how to make choices.

Day 3: what are your career goals - how to present these.
