The German Georg Simon Ohm (1789 - 1854), son to a locksmith, was a mathematician and physicist.

He started his career as a school teacher. During this period he discoverd Ohm's law, which states that the electric current through a conductor between two points is directly proportional to the voltage across those two points.

He lent his name to to the ohm, the unit of electrical resistance.
