About Lynn
Hi! My name is Lynn Barsema, I am twenty-two years old and currently a second year American Studies Bachelor's student. I was born and raised in Groningen and currently live just outside the city. My hobbies include playing and listening to music - I play bass guitar - as well as hanging out with friends, and watching movies.

Why American Studies?
I chose American Studies because of how broad and interdisciplinary it is. I love writing and after visiting an Open Day the contents of the courses convinced me to choose the study. I was excited about the combination of different disciplines and how interconnected all the different subjects are. Within the courses we rarely focus on just one discipline. Instead, we look at history, literature, sociology, politics, economics, art, and more. This allows us to explore subjects we are interested in without the boundaries of a fixed field of research. One of the aspects that really cemented my choice to study American Studies is this freedom to explore and decide on what you want to do independently. This varies from course to course but throughout everything you get a lot of opportunities to pick subjects you are interested in. While a lot of the program focuses on the US we also talk about Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada which offer some nice variety. Furthermore, the issues we look at in the US can be applied to different countries as well. For me the US is an interesting place because they have some of the issues we encounter here in Europe as well, just on a much larger scale. One last exciting aspect of American Studies is the Minor Abroad, which allows you to complete part of your degree in the US (or another country in the Americas). I am planning on going next year and am excited to be able to experience American culture in real life instead of just learning about it from a classroom.

Hoi! Ik ben Isaac, ik ben tweedejaars student archeologie aan de RUG en ik woon op kamers in de stad. Ik heb het erg naar mijn zin op de opleiding en ben ook lid van de studievereniging Bachur. Ik vind lezen en sporten erg leuk, ik ben lid van Tjas (de schaatsvereniging) en van de GSAC (de klimvereniging). Ik ben zelf altijd druk bezig met van alles, ik werk op festivals door heel Nederland dus ik kom ook nog eens ergens.

Waarom archeologie?
Ik wilde in eerste instantie archeologie doen omdat ik geschiedenis op de middelbare school erg leuk vond. Nu ik bezig ben vind ik het een heerlijke combinatie van onderzoek doen, puzzelen en lekker buiten aan de slag zijn. Ik vind vooral de prehistorie erg interessant en ga me daar ook in specialiseren vanaf dit jaar. Ik heb hiervoor een jaar de HBO-opleiding archeologie aan Saxion gevolgd en hoewel ik dat ook echt heel leuk vond, voel ik mij op mijn plek bij de bachelor archeologie aan de RUG.

Hey, my name is Giorgia, and I came all the way from Italy to Groningen to study BSc Biology! I'm currently in my third year, majoring in Behaviour and Neurosciences.
I took a mix of biomedical and neuroscience courses, and sprinkled my university years with being involved in study associations and social activities. Hi, my name is Sigrid, and I am a Dutch BME student here at the RUG.

The decision to choose BME was for me fairly simple. I have always enjoyed taking old devices apart, and trying to put them back together. I also have always been curious about the human body and anatomy. What I really like about this study is that you really learn how to create a solution, instead of just remembering the solutions other people created.

Hi! We are Arwen, Denisa, Kelian, and Meerke, and together we make the information team of Computing Science.

Our team consists of two bachelor and two master students (who also did the Computing Science Bachelor at RUG!). About Tom
Hi there! My name is Tom, I'm 22 years old and I'm currently halfway through my Bachelor Econometrics and Operational Research also known as EOR. My main interests have always been human behaviour, economics and mathematics, therefore when starting with studying I chose to follow the Sociology program. However, I found the statistics not as challenging as I had hoped for and had some trouble keeping up with the classical reading material. I was hoping to find something both more prevalent to my current experiences and more challenging to my mathematics skills. EOR ended up being the perfect choice for this as it includes both high-level mathematics and applications to economic situations. I am currently greatly enjoying the program and really appreciate the difficulty of the courses as it makes succeeding feel extra great. Right now I'm especially interested in the Operational Research courses and I'm considering pursuing a Master's degree in that field as well.

About Lineke
Hi! My name is Lineke, I’m twenty-two years old, and currently a third-year student of the BA English Language and Culture, where I’m specializing in linguistics. Besides my studies, I am involved in the study association NUTS, the programme committee, and a student organisation. In my free time, I like to watch films and series, hang out with my friends, and read.

Why English Language and Culture?
I chose to study English Language and Culture because English was my favourite subject in high school and I have a broad interest for language and literature in general. This made the programme a great fit for me, because you get the opportunity to study linguistics, modern literature, and medieval literature. In years 2 and 3, you can choose specific course units that fit your skills and interests, making the programme really diverse and personal.

Hallo! Mijn naam is Lana Fahham en ik ben 20 jaar oud. Ik ben derdejaarsstudent bij de studie Europese Talen en Culturen. Ik doe Engels als majortaal en daarbij volg ik twee (van de drie) profielen, Taal & Maatschappij en Cultuur & Literatuur. In mijn vrije tijd vind ik het leuk om met vrienden af te spreken, te sporten (zwemmen), en ook ben ik vaak boeken aan het lezen of een serie/film aan het kijken.

Waarom Europese Talen en Culturen?
Ik heb deze studie gekozen omdat ik alles wat ik interessant en leuk vind heb kunnen vinden binnen deze studie, zoals verschillende culturen, talen en literatuur. De variatie en keuzemogelijkheid, qua talen, vakken, en profielen binnen deze studie is erg groot. Ik vond het eerst moeilijk om een studiekeuze te maken, maar toen ik ETC vond en een open dag bezocht, wist ik zeker dat dit mijn studie zou zijn. Je kunt namelijk naast je hoofdtaal en hoofdprofiel een tweede taal of een tweede profiel doen. Er zijn drie profielen: Politiek & Maatschappij, Taal & Maatschappij en Cultuur & Literatuur. De laatste twee vond ik perfect passen bij mij, omdat ze aansluiten bij mijn hobby’s. Door de grote variatie, ontwikkel je met deze studie een heel breed en kritisch beeld, niet alleen van Europa, maar van de hele wereld. De studie is dus heel uitgebreid, wat leidt tot allerlei keuzemogelijkheden tijdens en na de studie, en dat is precies wat ik wilde.

Over Hanna
Heyhoi, ik ben Hanna, 19 jaar en ik zit momenteel in mijn tweede jaar van de bachelor Geschiedenis. Naast mijn studie ben ik actief lid van een christelijke studentenvereniging, werk ik bij een boekhandel, probeer ik zo af en toe nog wat te sporten en hou ik heel erg van lezen en gezelligheid.

Waarom Geschiedenis?
Plezier in het vak geschiedenis was de grootste reden voor mij om deze studie te kiezen. Hoe mensen in het verleden leefden heeft me altijd mateloos geboeid. Verder vind ik het heel interessant om te kijken naar grote ontwikkelingen die door de tijd heen te zien zijn, hiervan te leren en op vandaag de dag toe te passen. Daarnaast heeft alles wat er nu is een geschiedenis. Als je die geschiedenis kent en snapt, helpt het ook heel erg om de samenleving beter te begrijpen. En als je het beter begrijpt, kan je er ook beter iets aan veranderen, of je snapt waarom het zo moet blijven zoals het is. Deze studie is dus van enorm maatschappelijk belang.

Voor het maken van de keuze voor Geschiedenis heb ik me verdiept in heel veel studies en heb ik heel veel open dagen in verschillende steden bezocht. Daar sprong Geschiedenis echt uit. Vervolgens ben ik naar meerdere meeloopdagen geweest om te kijken of het echt wat voor mij was en in welke stad ik wilde gaan studeren.

Over Sarah
Hallo! Mijn naam is Sarah Elgersma, ik ben 20 jaar oud en ik ben tweedejaars studente Griekse en Latijnse taal en cultuur. Ik woon in Groningen en kom hier ook vandaan. Ik ben actief lid bij Boreas, de studievereniging van Grieks en Latijn, en heb in mijn eerste jaar als commissaris gediend in het bestuur. Naast de studie ben ik dol op lezen, sporten en mijn vrienden zien en ik heb ook nog een leuk baantje in de horeca!

Waarom Grieks en Latijn?
Ik studeer Grieks en Latijn omdat Latijn op de middelbare school altijd een heel leuk vak heb gevonden. Ik ben dol op taal, maar ook op geschiedenis, kunst, cultuur en filosofie. Deze studie is daarom de perfecte combinatie van al mijn interesses. Ik ben naar meerdere open dagen geweest van de RUG en dit was de eerste studie die me echt aansprak. Om me verder voor te bereiden heb ik ook nog de webklas gevolgd en een meeloopdag gedaan, beide leuke manieren om je te oriënteren op een studie! Ik heb zelf op de middelbare school helemaal geen Grieks gehad. Ik ben er mee begonnen in mijn tussenjaar voorafgaand aan de studie, maar ik heb het grootste deel geleerd in het eerste jaar van de studie. Mocht je in één van de twee talen geen eindexamen gedaan hebben, komt dit zeker goed tijdens je studie!

Hi, my name is Twan. While pursuing my Bachelors in 'Liberal Arts & Sciences' I discovered that I would like to be challenged more. So, logically, I joined the 'Bachelor's Honours Programme'. I completed both in June 2024 and am now working on my Masters in 'Arts, Cognition, Criticism' and 'Philosophy, Science, and Humanities. Besides this, I am still enjoying the incredible opportunities in Groningen; from table tennis or large events to the yearly guest-writer seminars. My name is Paulo, and I am from Mozambique. I’m in my third year of the Human Geography and Planning (HGP) degree program. I decided to study HGP because of a combination of two factors: the city and the program's strength. Groningen is a vibrant, green, student city, while the program provides interdisciplinary approaches and a research-driven approach to learning, with theory as its foundation.

Ever since I was young, I have been interested in global challenges such as social inequality, climate change, development, and urbanization, among others. A great benefit of the HGP program is that it dives into all of these challenges in great depth, along with practical, real-world experience from experts in both the physical and human domains.

Throughout my time at the University of Groningen, I have been able to understand how the future of cities and communities is shaped, the dynamics between development at both local and regional levels, and the appropriate skills to visualize solutions and problems.

About Michelle
Heey! I am Michelle, I am 20 years old and currently in my third year of studying International Business. In high school, I chose a wide range of subjects (Science and Technology with Economics) because I wasn't sure of the career I wanted to pursue. Many studies seemed interesting to me, both social and technical ones. Luckily, I stumbled upon the open day of International Business after a while. It's a very broad study that allows you to explore various career paths in the future.

In IB, you learn a little bit of everything. One big advantage of this program is that you get to spend half a year abroad! It's a mandatory part of your bachelor's degree. For me, this meant studying in New Zealand for the past six months, where I had the time of my life.

Furthermore, the program has a strong focus on an international perspective, which makes it quite different from business administration: when can a company start selling its products internationally, and what should the company consider in this process? This is an important question that you'll often answer in the IB program. I also enjoy learning about different cultures: for example, if you go on a business trip to Japan, it's considered impolite to shake hands, and instead, a bow is expected.

About Liz
My name is Liz Winterhalter and I am a student in the International Relations and International Organizations Bachelor’s programme. I was born in the United States but was raised mainly across the Middle East and Europe. This cosmopolitan start to my life has motivated me to pursue the study of politics and of course take a major interest in the languages and cultures of the world. As far as hobbies go, I love going to the gym, playing video games, drawing, knitting, and playing chess. Additionally, next to my studies, I am an active member of the IRIO study association Clio.

Why IRIO?
I chose the IRIO programme here at the University of Groningen because I saw so much potential in the classes that are provided. Due to my background of moving, I had absolutely no geographical limit to where I could place my application, but Groningen spoke to me for three main reasons. The first reason is that the courses within the programme are specific. With IR studies in general, they tend to be very broad, so seeing that the individual courses are all for a specific field was very intriguing. Secondly, I loved the built-in language course to study. Language learning is a huge passion of mine, and having another language in the field of IR is an invaluable skill. Lastly, the overall flexible course structure, and the ability to have a bachelor's degree that can really be supplemented with anything additional you wish to take is a huge advantage.

Over Isa
Ik ben Isa en ik studeer Internationale Betrekkingen & Internationale Organisatie. Ik kom uit Overijssel maar ben in 2023 verhuisd naar Groningen. Momenteel ben ik actief lid van SIB (Studentenvereniging voor Internationale Betrekkingen) en speel ik twee keer per week volleybal bij Donitas. Naast studeren lees ik graag, speel ik piano, eet ik met vrienden en speel ik games.

Waarom IRIO?
Ik kwam voor het eerst in aanraking met IRIO omdat een familielid het studeerde. Een jaar later begon ik met het proberen van verschillende MUN-debatten en ontdekte hoe beperkt mijn kijk op de wereld eigenlijk was. Als kind besef je opeens dat de wereld veel groter is dan je achtertuin en dit was het moment ik besefte hoeveel groter dan dat het nog was.

Ik koos IRIO vooral omdat het zeer relevant is. Voor mij werd het leuk omdat alles wat je kunt leren toepasbaar is op echte nieuwsberichten en actuele debatten. Het idee om wereldwijde problemen te kunnen ontleden voorbij generalisaties zoals bijvoorbeeld 'dit land/ding is slecht' naar 'waarom?' en 'hoe?' sprak me erg aan. Ook leek IRIO de beste studie voor mij omdat het veel verschillende vakken heeft. Je krijgt een toolbox met internationale geschiedenis, economie, rechten, politicologie, filosofie etc. Daarnaast vond ik de studie in Groningen vooral uniek omdat het een vreemde taaldeel heeft. Ik overwoog bijvoorbeeld diplomatiek te gaan doen en het wegnemen van taalbarrières komt erg goed van pas.

Hello everyone! I am Wouter, a twenty year old Life Science and Technology student and I am currently in my second year of the study. When I was choosing what I wanted to study I was not really sure what I wanted, all I knew was that I wanted it to have something to do with Biology. This was because I was especially interested in how the human body worked and why the body does what it does. The logical choice would of course have been to just go study Biology, but I was also interested in how the other sciences, such as chemistry and physics, could explain how all sorts of biological processes worked. My favourite subjects in high school were chemistry, biology and mathematics, so I really wanted to study something that would combine them. Life Science and Technology has proved to be the best choice for me, since it is an interdisciplinary programme that focuses on both theory and practical skills. Hey! My name is Cyril. I’m originally from Slovakia, and I am 21 years old, second-year student currently persuing a bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics. I’m really passionate about math and love sharing that enthusiasm with others. Since I’m still in my second year, I haven’t decided yet on a specific area to focus on. I enjoy exploring different fields of math and thinking about what I might want to specialize in later.

What I love the most about studying math is how it teaches you to think critically and tackle problems in creative ways. Over Alana
Hey! Mijn naam is Alana Swinkels, ik ben 22 jaar en momenteel een tweedejaars student Midden-Oostenstudies. Oorspronkelijk kom ik uit het zuiden van Nederland, maar ik ben voor mijn studie naar Groningen verhuisd. Buiten mijn studie ben ik ook actief in een commissie, sport ik graag bij de ACLO en werk ik bij Studium Generale. Bij mooi weer zul je me ook vaak tegenkomen in het Noorderplantsoen of op een terras!

Waarom Midden-Oostenstudies?
Ik had eerst de studie International Relations gekozen. Na dit een jaar te hebben gestudeerd, ontdekte ik dat ik cultuur, geschiedenis en religie erg interessant vind en dat ik politieke theorie minder leuk vind. Daarom besloot ik Midden-Oostenstudies (MOS) als tweede bachelor te gaan volgen. Het Midden-Oosten is een enorm interessante en diverse regio, die ook vaak (negatief) in het nieuws is. Bij deze studie leer je kritisch te kijken naar de oorzaken en gevolgen van de ontwikkelingen in deze regio. En natuurlijk leer je ook Arabisch of Hebreeuws, wat voor mij een groot pluspunt is.

Over Dax
Mijn naam is Dax en ik ben bachelorstudent Pedagogische Wetenschappen. Ik heb ooit gekozen voor Pedagogische Wetenschappen omdat het een ontzettend brede studie is met een divers werkveld. Wat mij hierin vooral aanspreekt, is dat je niet alleen individuen helpt, maar altijd de hele context meeneemt – denk aan de school, (sport)vereniging, vriendjes en de familie. Dit maakt het werkveld dynamisch en biedt de mogelijkheid om in verschillende sectoren aan de slag te gaan. Ik vind het belangrijk om bij te dragen aan de ontwikkeling van kinderen en gezinnen, en met mijn studie bouw ik aan een toekomst waarin ik dat kan doen.

Over Tristan
Hoi! Ik ben Tristan en ik doe de bachelor Sociologie. Op de middelbare was ik erg geïnteresseerd in de maatschappij en het gedrag van mensen. Ik vond het interessant hoe de maatschappij veranderde door de mensen die er deel van uitmaken. Ik wist dus wel waar mijn interesses lagen, maar niet wat ik later wilde doen. Hierom koos ik voor Sociologie: een studie die mijn interesses combineerde, maar nog erg breed is, zodat ik later nog allerlei kanten op kan gaan. 

Tijdens de bachelor leer je onder andere op verschillende manieren hoe de maatschappij in elkaar zit. Je leert de theorie bij hoorcolleges, en vaak pas je dit toe bij werkcolleges. Ook zijn er veel verschillende projecten in de studie waarin je leert hoe je zelf onderzoek moet doen. Sommige projecten zijn van externe opdrachtgevers. Het maakt het erg leuk dat je in opdracht van hen iets kan neerzetten waar ook daadwerkelijk iets mee wordt gedaan.

Wat ik nog meer leuk vind aan Sociologie is dat het redelijk kleinschalig is. Dit zorgt ervoor dat je veel van je medestudenten bij naam kent en dat er een gezellige sfeer heerst. Ook hebben we een hechte studievereniging die allerlei leuke activiteiten organiseert voor Sociologie studenten.

Over Thirsa
Hoi! Mijn naam is Thirsa en ik ben momenteel masterstudent Sociologie, met als specialisatie Criminaliteit en Veiligheid. Hiervoor heb ik de bachelor Sociologie gevolgd en met veel plezier afgerond.

Het maken van een studiekeuze vond ik destijds behoorlijk lastig. Ik had brede interesses en vond het moeilijk om een studie te kiezen die écht bij mij paste. Daarom heb ik bij veel verschillende opleidingen gekeken en lang getwijfeld. Wat uiteindelijk voor mij de doorslag gaf, was mijn interesse in maatschappelijke vraagstukken. Ik ben altijd al nieuwsgierig geweest naar hoe onze samenleving werkt, waarom bepaalde dingen zijn zoals ze zijn en vooral hoe ze misschien beter zouden kunnen. Die maatschappelijke betrokkenheid bracht mij bij de studie Sociologie. 

Bij de studie leer je kritisch te kijken naar de wereld om je heen, hoe de mechanismen achter maatschappelijke uitkomsten werken, maar leer je ook nadenken over beleidsmatige oplossingen. Veel onderwerpen die worden behandeld sluiten aan op de actualiteit en dat maakt de studie naar mijn mening ook erg leuk en totaal niet stoffig. Daarnaast is het een best brede studie, de samenleving bestaat namelijk ook uit veel verschillende aspecten en hier leren we veel over. Dat maakt de studie erg veelzijdig, maar er is ook genoeg ruimte om je te verdiepen binnen specifieke gebieden van de Sociologie.

Over Laurie
Hoi! Mijn naam is Laurie van der Meijden, ik zit nu in het tweede jaar van de Bachelor Taalwetenschap en woon sinds een jaar in de mooie stad Groningen. Ik ben actief bij een studentenvereniging en ik heb een bijbaan als huishoudelijke hulp. Mijn vrije tijd vul ik met pianospelen en met mijn vriendinnen afspreken en is er altijd wel wat te doen in de stad.

Waarom Taalwetenschap?
Hoewel de naam “Taalwetenschap” me niet direct warm maakte, deed de beschrijving dat wel. De vraag “Hoe ontstaat taal?” heeft me niet meer losgelaten en toen ik van de andere vakken in de bachelor hoorde, als Stoornissen in de Taalontwikkeling, was ik al helemaal geïnteresseerd. Na de Open Dag en Eén Dag Student was ik volledig overtuigd van mijn studiekeuze en ik heb nog geen enkel moment spijt gehad! Taalwetenschap is een ontzettend interessante en gevarieerde opleiding. De vakken van de ene kant zoomen in op hoe taal werkt in de hersenen en ook hoe taalstoornissen ontstaan. Ook meertaligheid wordt besproken. De andere kant focust op taal: hoe taal ontstaat, waar de verandering vandaan komt en hoe taal is opgebouwd. In tegenstelling tot wat veel mensen denken is deze studie niet gefocust op het Nederlands of op een andere taal, maar op taal in het algemeen. Kortom, de Wetenschap achter Taal!

Over Marie

Hi! Mijn naam is Marie Custers en ik studeer sinds 2021 Tandheelkunde aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Ik ben ontzettend blij met de studiekeuze die ik heb gemaakt, en ik zal je vertellen waarom!

Stel je voor dat je elke dag mensen kunt helpen om ervoor te zorgen dat zijzelf en hun tanden gezond zijn. Dat is precies wat je doet als je tandheelkunde studeert. Binnen de opleiding kun je de theorie die je leert toepassen in de praktijk, wat de opleiding erg afwisselend maakt. Wat het ook afwisselend maakt, is dat je met allerlei verschillende mensen te maken krijgt, jong en oud. Je leert niet alleen over mondproblematiek en hoe je deze oplost, maar ook over hoe je goed met mensen kunt praten en luisteren. En wat ik het meest leuk vind aan de studie: je kunt mensen van hun pijn of problemen afhelpen, en echt van betekenis voor hen zijn!

Wat Groningen onderscheidt van Amsterdam en Nijmegen, is de persoonlijke en intieme sfeer van de studie. De kleinschaligheid van de faculteit in Groningen zorgt voor nauwe interactie tussen studenten en docenten, waardoor een ondersteunende leeromgeving ontstaat. Bovendien vond ik de stad gewoon ontzettend leuk. Je kunt in Groningen genieten van een rijke studentenervaring in een bruisende stad.

Over Jan Pieter

Hoewel voor de opleiding Theologie voorkennis over religie of zelf gelovig zijn geen vereisten zijn, is het voor mij heel bijzonder hoe Theologie mij ook persoonlijk heeft geraakt en verdieping brengt in mijn eigen geloofsleven. Aan de ene kant door teksten uit de bijbel op een andere manier te bekijken en ze te zien als onderdeel binnen een rijke en intrigerende geschiedenis. En aan de andere kant door deel te worden van een groep studenten die bestaat uit veel andersdenkenden die allemaal op een eigen manier met hun geloof - of juist geen geloof - bezig zijn, maar daarnaast ook open staan voor een verrijkend gesprek.

Een van de mooiste kanten aan Theologie is de veelzijdigheid; de bachelor is echt een soort proeverij van verschillende disciplines zoals de talen Grieks en Hebreeuws, en vakken als filosofie, geschiedenis, exegese, sociologie en psychologie. Je vrij bent om je in al deze dingen te verdiepen en om vervolgens te kijken waar je hart licht en waar jij je verder in wilt verdiepen en specialiseren.

Wat ik verder zo uniek vind aan de opleiding is dat we tijdens de colleges eigenlijk altijd de mogelijkheid hebben om verder in te gaan op onderwerpen die ons interesseren. Dit komt mede doordat er sprake is van kleinschalig onderwijs (in een prachtig gebouw!), en er daardoor ruimte is voor persoonlijke aandacht. Het is echt een grote luxe om docenten die ongelofelijk veel weten over hun vakgebied, aan de tand te voelen over wat jij nu echt wil weten. Over die rare tekst in Genesis, die ene niet bijbelse tekst die toch wel heel interessant kan zijn, de ideeën die Luther had over de macht van de Paus of de ideeën van Plato.

Overweeg jij om deze mooie studie te volgen maar twijfel je nog? Dan is het een goed idee om een Open Dag te bezoeken of om je in te schrijven voor Een Dag Student, en om zo een voorproefje te krijgen van echte colleges die je zult krijgen tijdens de opleiding.
