Hallo! Mijn naam is Jelmer en ik doe de Academische Opleiding Leraar Basisonderwijs.

Al vanaf de basisschool vond ik het leuk om voor de klas te staan, spreekbeurten te geven en uitleg te geven aan klasgenoten. Daarom wist ik al snel dat ik iets in het onderwijs wilde doen. De AOLB sprak me aan omdat het een mooie combinatie is van praktijk en theorie, waarbij je al vanaf het eerste semester stageloopt. Dit maakt de opleiding afwisselend en uitdagend, omdat je de theorie uit de colleges direct in de klas kunt toepassen en kan herkennen.

Wat deze opleiding extra interessant maakt, is dat je je niet alleen verdiept in het lesgeven, maar ook in hoe kinderen leren en zich ontwikkelen. Je leert niet alleen hoe je goede lessen geeft, maar ook hoe je onderwijs kunt verbeteren, zowel in je eigen klas als in het algemeen.

Over Anna
Hi! Ik ben Anna en ik doe de Academische Opleiding Leraar Basisonderwijs (AOLB). Hiervoor heb ik een jaartje rechten gedaan, dus ik weet hoe het is om verschillende, wellicht moeilijke, keuzes te maken. Met drie jaar AOLB erop, loop ik nog steeds met enorm veel plezier stage, waar de leerlingen je direct al zien als 'juf'. Daarnaast vind ik de studie een enorm mooie combinatie tussen theorie en praktijk. Wat je in de collegebanken leert, zie je direct terugkomen op je stage.

Wat ik wil met de studie, weet ik nog niet. Wel weet ik dat ik nog veel verschillende kanten op kan en dat de weg daarnaar toe een enorm leuke is!

Over Matthijs
Hallo! Mijn naam is Matthijs en ik zit in het derde jaar van de AOLB. 

Al sinds jongs af aan wist ik al dat ik graag voor de klas wilde staan. Vanaf de
middelbare school ging ik al af en toe mee met mijn moeder, die ook juf was, en zo kon ik al een beetje wat van het vak proeven. Echter toen ik bijna mijn vwo6 had afgerond, sloeg de twijfel toch een beetje toe. Mijn vrienden gingen allemaal naar de universiteit en ik wist ook niet zeker of de PABO iets voor mij was. Toen ik achter het bestaan van de AOLB kwam, was ik meteen verkocht. Met deze opleiding doe ik wat het leukst vind en daarbij krijg ik ook de theoretische uitdaging die ik leuk vind en aan kan. Daarnaast heb je na 4 jaar 2 bachelors en kan je veel meer kanten op na je opleiding.

About Lynn
Hi! My name is Lynn Barsema, I am twenty-two years old and currently a second year American Studies Bachelor's student. I was born and raised in Groningen and currently live just outside the city. My hobbies include playing and listening to music - I play bass guitar - as well as hanging out with friends, and watching movies.

Why American Studies?
I chose American Studies because of how broad and interdisciplinary it is. I love writing and after visiting an Open Day the contents of the courses convinced me to choose the study. I was excited about the combination of different disciplines and how interconnected all the different subjects are. Within the courses we rarely focus on just one discipline. Instead, we look at history, literature, sociology, politics, economics, art, and more. This allows us to explore subjects we are interested in without the boundaries of a fixed field of research. One of the aspects that really cemented my choice to study American Studies is this freedom to explore and decide on what you want to do independently. This varies from course to course but throughout everything you get a lot of opportunities to pick subjects you are interested in. While a lot of the program focuses on the US we also talk about Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada which offer some nice variety. Furthermore, the issues we look at in the US can be applied to different countries as well. For me the US is an interesting place because they have some of the issues we encounter here in Europe as well, just on a much larger scale. One last exciting aspect of American Studies is the Minor Abroad, which allows you to complete part of your degree in the US (or another country in the Americas). I am planning on going next year and am excited to be able to experience American culture in real life instead of just learning about it from a classroom.

Over Isaac
Hoi! Ik ben Isaac, ik ben tweedejaars student archeologie aan de RUG en ik woon op kamers in de stad. Ik heb het erg naar mijn zin op de opleiding en ben ook lid van de studievereniging Bachur. Ik vind lezen en sporten erg leuk, ik ben lid van Tjas (de schaatsvereniging) en van de GSAC (de klimvereniging). Ik ben zelf altijd druk bezig met van alles, ik werk op festivals door heel Nederland dus ik kom ook nog eens ergens.

Waarom archeologie?
Ik wilde in eerste instantie archeologie doen omdat ik geschiedenis op de middelbare school erg leuk vond. Nu ik bezig ben vind ik het een heerlijke combinatie van onderzoek doen, puzzelen en lekker buiten aan de slag zijn. Ik vind vooral de prehistorie erg interessant en ga me daar ook in specialiseren vanaf dit jaar. Ik heb hiervoor een jaar de HBO-opleiding archeologie aan Saxion gevolgd en hoewel ik dat ook echt heel leuk vond, voel ik mij op mijn plek bij de bachelor archeologie aan de RUG.

About Alessandra
Ciao a tutti! My name is Alessandra Gugliandolo, I am 20 years old, and I come from the warm and beautiful Sicily. I am a third-year BA Art History student and I decided to dedicate the first semester of this last bachelor year to the Anthropology minor. In addition to my love for art, I am obsessed with languages, and I use every available occasion to learn something new about a new culture. I love anything related to theatre and musicals and I myself for many years was part of a choir and a musical theatre group! I consider my time on stage among the best moments of my life. As for my hobbies, I like reading, drawing, and playing the ukulele. This last activity specifically reminds me of my sister, whom I wholeheartedly love. I care for animals and nature, that is also why I enjoy going on walks in the forest nearby my house here in Groningen as it allows me to be in contact with them. Of course no, I won’t kill that spider for you!

Why Art History?
I realized I wanted to study art history at university when, in high school, I was the only one actively taking notes and engaging in conversations with the teacher during the art history lessons. I was always eager to talk about art in my assignments and in front of my classmates. I tried to listen to my heart and desires and observed how I spontaneously behaved in class. Sometimes the right answers are simpler and closer to us than we expect them to be. From that moment on, I felt like nothing interested me more than art, in all its expressions, and it was then clear in my head: I wanted to study art history at the university. The beauty of this academic field lies in its ability to deepen our understanding of human history since all art is a reflection of its time and its respective values, beliefs, and customs. Moreover, it enhances our critical thinking skills as we are constantly required to analyze works with careful observation and compare each one of them with examples from all kinds of cultural backgrounds. Apart from the appreciation of artistic skill and technique, every artwork becomes the mirror of a story yet to be discovered: the story of thousands of lives, of an array of cultures, which inevitably encourages a profound appreciation for diversity and a broader understanding of the world and those who lived, live, and will live in it.

We all are in different years of the bachelor and master AI. Therefore, we can help you with a broad variety of questions! Why Arts, Culture and Media?
I have always been more of an ‘arts person’. At first, I preferred to keep the arts as a hobby but I soon realised that studying something you love is *the way to go*. Enjoying what you study is the most important factor in choosing a potential programme: it will make your life as a student way easier. Arts, Culture and Media, is a theoretical programme that encompasses a very large range of topics regarding the arts and the society that engages with them. Starting off with courses that set the foundation for the knowledge you will use during your bachelor, you are quickly able to specialise in two disciplines to focus on: I chose Music and Visual Arts. You do not need to produce art yourself for this Bachelor which is an important point to note. I myself play music but someone with no knowledge on the topic could excel at the course as much as someone who has been playing an instrument for years.

Why Groningen?
I was originally attracted to the teaching style of the Dutch system, which I found to be similar to the international teaching style I was used to having in my education. The University of Groningen is a very well ranked establishment worldwide and after having applied to other universities in the Netherlands, I decided to go for this one. I then arrived in Groningen in 2021 to study Computer Science at the RUG. After a year I decided to switch studies and looking at what programmes were available at the university, I chose ACM. The city being a great size for me, it is also full of students filling the streets day and night which makes the ‘student experience’ incredible and rich.

About Veerle
Astronomy, no matter how long I have been studying it, it keeps intriguing me and baffling me. If you’re at a crossroads and are wondering whether to study astronomy, don’t hesitate to explore any option further! I know how daunting that decision can feel. I have been interested in space as long as I can remember, and my curiosity only grew when I was given a telescope as a child. About Wout
Hello, my name is Wout Sijtsma and I am a second-year Astronomy and first-year philosophy student at the university! Next to my studies, I love to play volleyball with my team or test out different sports with my friends. Furthermore, I like to get drinks with my roommates or friends. Due to my background in tutoring and working on the promotion team I am used to working with prospective students, so don't hesitate to ask me your questions!!

Over Selien

Al gauw wist ik dat ik cijfers enorm leuk vond en hier later misschien wat mee wou gaan doen. Daarbij leek het mij erg interessant om te gaan kijken hoe een bedrijf in elkaar zit en hoe deze op verschillende manieren aangestuurd kan worden. Met deze interesses kwam ik uit bij de BSc Bedrijfskunde. Ondertussen heb ik deze studie afgerond met de richting accountancy & controlling. Ik vond dit een ontzettende leuke mix van de cijfers en het bedrijfsleven. Op dit moment ben ik de MSc Accountancy aan het volgen, wat een mooie aansluiting is op de tracht die ik gevolgd heb.

Naast Groningen ben ik ook, voor de studie Bedrijfskunde, langs geweest op andere locaties. Het is belangrijk om te weten dat iedere studie anders ingericht wordt. De studie Bedrijfskunde in Groningen sprak mij het meeste aan. Het is dus van groot belang om goed naar de verschillen te kijken. Over Danique
Hoi, mijn naam is Danique. Na het afronden van de bachelor Bewegingswetenschappen aan de RUG ben ik momenteel bezig met de master Human Movement Sciences. Ik ben altijd al bezig geweest met sport en mijn interesse in het menselijk lichaam heeft mij uiteindelijk voor Bewegingswetenschappen doen kiezen. Met deze keuze kwam ook het op kamers gaan in Groningen, lid worden van een studentenvereniging en het opbouwen van een sociaal leven in deze prachtige stad.

Als student voorlichter voor Bewegingswetenschappen deel ik graag mijn ervaringen, dus stuur vooral een mailtje als je vragen hebt over deze studie, studeren in Groningen of alle andere vragen over het studentenleven!

Ik ben Marco en zit momenteel in mijn eerste jaar van de Master Sport Sciences. Hiervoor heb ik de Bachelor Bewegingswetenschappen behaald hier aan de RUG.
Ik heb deze studie gekozen vanwege mijn passie voor sport en het menselijk bewegen. Naast mijn studie doe ik een bestuursjaar bij Tennisclub Albertus Magnus en hou ik ervan om te tennissen en hardlopen. Na mijn studie wil ik graag werken in het onderwijs, de topsport of het onderzoek. Gelukkig valt er met deze studie veel te kiezen!

The decision to choose BME was for me fairly simple. I have always enjoyed taking old devices apart, and trying to put them back together. I also have always been curious about the human body and anatomy. What I really like about this study is that you really learn how to create a solution, instead of just remembering the solutions other people created.

About Luiza
Hello everyone! My name is Luiza and I’m 20 years old. I am currently pursuing a bachelor’s in Communication and Information Studies (CIS) and I am a third year student. I am from Romania and when I was 13 years old I moved to Spain to continue my studies. Afterwards, I came to the Netherlands for my bachelor degree. I am also taking a minor in Digital Humanities (DH) due to my desire to delve deeper into the digital world. Besides studying, my favorite past-times are going to the gym, especially taking boxing classes, watching horror and thriller movies and letting my inner Picasso out through drawing.

Why Communication and Information Studies?
Initially, I was very indecisive on what to pursue, but one thing was clear: in my two years of doing IB highschool, I have come to love the art of writing essays and research. During my last year of highschool I spent quite some time researching what programme would best align with my interests, until I finally stumbled upon the bachelor’s Communication and Information Studies programme at University of Groningen (UG). After taking a deeper look into what it has to offer and attending the Open Days, I just knew it. The programme has many things to offer, seeing as it is a diverse field that encapsulates a variety of sub-fields: discourse and language communication, but also courses on corporate and digital communication.

Over Kiki
Hoi! Ik ben Kiki, 22 jaar en tweedejaars student CIS. Ik volg de Dutch track binnen CIS. Naast mijn studie ben ik lid bij de studentenzwemvereniging in Groningen, De Golfbreker, waar ik in meerdere commissies heb gezeten. Daarnaast werk ik als roostermaker bij het UMCG.

Waarom Communicatie- en Informatiewetenschappen?
Voordat ik begon aan CIS heb ik twee jaar Bewegingswetenschappen gestudeerd, ook in Groningen. Die studie was echter veel te wiskundig voor mij, dus besloot ik te stoppen en iets anders te gaan doen. Maar wat? Op de middelbare school vond ik Engels en Nederlands altijd erg leuk en dat ging me altijd best gemakkelijk af. Omdat ik sowieso een interesse in taal heb en de breedheid van het programma me erg aansprak, besloot ik tijdens de open dag naar een voorlichting van CIS te gaan. Daar heb ik, naast de presentatie te hebben bijgewoond, ook even gesproken met de student ambassador van dat jaar. Ik was namelijk bang dat het programma erg gefocust zou zijn op marketing en bedrijfscommunicatie, en dat lag mij niet zo.. Ze zei echter dat dit niet het geval is en dat je veel ruimte hebt om je eigen programma samen te stellen, met vakken die jou interesseren. Dit gesprek heeft ervoor gezorgd dat ik uiteindelijk voor CIS heb gekozen!

About Arwen, Denisa, Kelian and Meerke
Hi! We are Arwen, Denisa, Kelian, and Meerke, and together we make the information team of Computing Science.

Our team consists of two bachelor and two master students (who also did the Computing Science Bachelor at RUG!). Each one of us chose Computing Science for a different reason, ranging from interest in problem solving, and mathematics to programming. About Imaji
Hi! My name is Imaji Kasih Ayunda Rizal, but everyone calls me Imaji. I come from Jakarta, Indonesia, and I'm currently a second-year student in the Data Science and Society program. My academic journey at Campus Fryslan began in September 2022. Apart from my studies, I'm actively involved with the Indonesian student association in Leeuwarden and Groningen. This year, I'm taking on the role of chairing the Indonesian Day event. Additionally, I enjoy my part-time work with the University. Beyond my academic commitments, I occasionally read books, play the piano, and draw.

I chose this program because I was initially seeking an IT-focused field and explored various universities across the Netherlands. What captivated me about this particular program is its relevance and its comprehensive approach, considering both the technical and societal aspects of data. Since joining, I've encountered numerous exciting opportunities. Moving to the Netherlands was a significant decision, but the warm and welcoming community I discovered here made the adjustment smoother for me.

About Tom
Hi there! My name is Tom, I'm 22 years old and I'm currently halfway through my Bachelor Econometrics and Operational Research also known as EOR. My main interests have always been human behaviour, economics and mathematics, therefore when starting with studying I chose to follow the Sociology program. However, I found the statistics not as challenging as I had hoped for and had some trouble keeping up with the classical reading material. I was hoping to find something both more prevalent to my current experiences and more challenging to my mathematics skills. EOR ended up being the perfect choice for this as it includes both high-level mathematics and applications to economic situations. I am currently greatly enjoying the program and really appreciate the difficulty of the courses as it makes succeeding feel extra great. Right now I'm especially interested in the Operational Research courses and I'm considering pursuing a Master's degree in that field as well.

Hi! My name is Marissa, I am 22 years old, and I am currently finishing my Bachelor's degree in Economics and Business Economics, following the Economics track.

In high school, I had no idea what I wanted to study. I enjoyed so many different subjects, which led me to choose a broad subject package: N&T with Economics. Eventually, I decided to study Econometrics and Operations Research, but after a year, I realized that it wasn’t the right programme for me. After a lot of research and asking around, I decided to switch to Economics and Business Economics, and I haven’t regretted it for a second!

Besides my studies, I am very active in my study association, and I also play tennis here in Groningen. I also love having dinner with my friends. What makes it even more fun is that Groningen is the most vibrant and sociable student city in the Netherlands!

In short, I am very happy with my choice. What I really appreciate about my programme is its broad scope, allowing you to pursue many different career paths and work at various companies later on. I really enjoy the combination of economics and mathematics, which is a significant part of the programme, especially in the Economics track. Since I found this both interesting and educational, I have decided to continue with a Master’s in Economics to deepen my knowledge even further.

Hi! My name is Lineke, I’m twenty-two years old, and currently a third-year student of the BA English Language and Culture, where I’m specializing in linguistics. Besides my studies, I am involved in the study association NUTS, the programme committee, and a student organisation. In my free time, I like to watch films and series, hang out with my friends, and read.

Why English Language and Culture?
I chose to study English Language and Culture because English was my favourite subject in high school and I have a broad interest for language and literature in general. This made the programme a great fit for me, because you get the opportunity to study linguistics, modern literature, and medieval literature. In years 2 and 3, you can choose specific course units that fit your skills and interests, making the programme really diverse and personal.

About Lana
Hello! My name is Lana Fahham, and I am 20 years old. I am currently in my third year of the European Languages and Cultures BA programme. I am taking English as my major language and following both the Language & Society and the Culture & Literature profiles. In my free time I enjoy reading, watching a movie/series, and swimming. As well as just spending some time with friends.

Why European Languages and Cultures?
I chose this programme because it is quite broad. I have always been interested in different languages, cultures, and literature. I found everything I like and enjoy within this programme. It was quite hard for me to choose what I wanted to study and what suited my interests, but when I visited the Open Day of ELC, I just knew that this programme was the perfect fit for me. There is so much variation and options to choose from regarding languages, subjects, and profiles. Aside from choosing a major language and main profile, you can also take courses in a second language or profile. The three profiles are: Politics & Society, Language & Society, and the Culture & Literature. I found the last two suited me perfectly, because they go in hand with my hobbies and interests. Due to the huge variation within this programme, you do not only develop a broad and critical perspective on Europe, but on the entire world. Hence, the broadness of this programme leads to many opportunities within and after your studies, which is exactly what I wanted.

About Cătălina
Hello everyone! My name is Cătălina, and I am 20 years old. I am from Moldova, and I have a deep appreciation for my cultural heritage. I am in my first year of the European Languages and Cultures BA programme, but I am doing a double Bachelor’s, combining it with the BA IRIO. I chose Spanish as my major language, as I have always wanted to manoeuvre such a melodious language. At the same time, I am taking Russian classes, which I find fascinating. I dance in my free time and adore reading and watching movies and series. Additionally, I love travelling and discovering the cultural richness of various societies.

Why European Languages and Cultures?
Throughout my life, I have developed a profound passion for culture, literature and languages, and their impact on societal norms and views. Hence, European Languages and Cultures aligned perfectly with my interests. At first, I was not sure if applying was a good idea, as I was already doing another Bachelor’s degree, which is why I decided to participate in the Web class. For a month I had the opportunity to delve into the subjects of ELC, getting to explore one profile per week. As a literary enthusiast myself, I was looking forward to the Culture & Literature profile, and I can confidently say that my expectations were highly surpassed. Getting to explore society through a literary lens, examining the influence of texts on world politics, and analysing contemporary issues depicted through art are the highlights of my experience.

However, the programme is not limited to literary courses. The three profiles vary on the spectrum, by covering a vast spectrum of themes. From major literary themes and criticism (Culture & Literature profile) to language intricacies (Language & Society profile) and political discourse (Politics & Society), the programme develops a critical view of Europe from a multilateral perspective.

Hallo! Mijn naam is Lana Fahham en ik ben 20 jaar oud. Ik ben derdejaarsstudent bij de studie Europese Talen en Culturen. Ik doe Engels als majortaal en daarbij volg ik twee (van de drie) profielen, Taal & Maatschappij en Cultuur & Literatuur. In mijn vrije tijd vind ik het leuk om met vrienden af te spreken, te sporten (zwemmen), en ook ben ik vaak boeken aan het lezen of een serie/film aan het kijken.

Waarom Europese Talen en Culturen?
Ik heb deze studie gekozen omdat ik alles wat ik interessant en leuk vind heb kunnen vinden binnen deze studie, zoals verschillende culturen, talen en literatuur. De variatie en keuzemogelijkheid, qua talen, vakken, en profielen binnen deze studie is erg groot. Ik vond het eerst moeilijk om een studiekeuze te maken, maar toen ik ETC vond en een open dag bezocht, wist ik zeker dat dit mijn studie zou zijn. Je kunt namelijk naast je hoofdtaal en hoofdprofiel een tweede taal of een tweede profiel doen. Er zijn drie profielen: Politiek & Maatschappij, Taal & Maatschappij en Cultuur & Literatuur. De laatste twee vond ik perfect passen bij mij, omdat ze aansluiten bij mijn hobby’s. Door de grote variatie, ontwikkel je met deze studie een heel breed en kritisch beeld, niet alleen van Europa, maar van de hele wereld. De studie is dus heel uitgebreid, wat leidt tot allerlei keuzemogelijkheden tijdens en na de studie, en dat is precies wat ik wilde.

Hoi ik ben Eva, 20 jaar oud en zit in mijn derde jaar van de bachelor Farmacie. Farmacie is een brede afwisselende studie. Aan de enerzijds de theorie achter een medicijn en anderzijds de praktijkvakken op het laboratorium. Door de jaren heen word je opgeleid tot een echte kennis expert op alle vlakken die te maken hebben met een medicijn. Over Jimmy
Hoi! Ik ben Jimmy en intussen alweer derdejaars student Filosofie. Om te beginnen moet ik toegeven dat filosofie niet mijn eerste studiekeuze is. Ondanks mijn interesse in het vakgebied, leek de studie mij te abstract en te veel leeswerk. Ik ben dan ook begonnen aan de studie Econometrie. Na een jaar wiskundige sommen maken en statische modellen toepassen merkte ik dat mijn interesse voor filosofie opbloeide. Zo ben ik begonnen aan de bachelor Filosofie, die ik op dit moment combineer met Econometrie.

De meeste twijfels die ik zelf had over de studie verdwenen vrijwel meteen in de eerste weken van de studie. Het studeren van filosofie is een stuk minder abstract dan het lijkt. Vele onderwerpen die worden behandeld sluiten aan op thema's in de actualiteit, denk aan onderwerpen binnen de ethiek en politieke filosofie. Door de discussie aan te gaan met medestudenten in de werkgroepen ontwikkel je verschillende vaardigheden, die in elke discipline nuttig zijn. Filosofie studeren is in mijn ervaring heel nuttig en leuk. Zeker op onze kleinschalige faculteit in de gezelligste stad van Nederland. Over Jona
Hey! Ik ben Jona, tweedejaars student filosofie. Bij het maken van een studiekeuze ben ik in veel verschillende steden geweest en heb ik gekeken bij heel veel studies. Eigenlijk vond (vind) ik alle studies die ik heb bekeken wel interessant, en daarom voelde het onmogelijk om een studie te kiezen. Uiteindelijk heb ik gekozen voor filosofie in Groningen omdat je met filosofie niet zo zeer een richting kiest, of wordt klaargestoomd om je bij een bepaalde beroepsgroep te voegen, maar je juist heel veel brede kennis opdoet die eigenlijk bijna overal op van toepassing kan zijn. De studie filosofie in Groningen staat hoog aangeschreven, en er is een eigen faculteit wijsbegeerte met een hele fijne sfeer. Naast filosofie volg ik vakken bij taalwetenschap, en ik hoop volgend jaar ook te beginnen aan de studie psychologie. Buiten mijn studie speel ik gitaar en piano en doe ik aan boulderen. Ook ben ik actief bij de studievereniging (STUFF) en zit ik in de faculteitsraad van de faculteit wijsbegeerte.

Hallo! Ik ben Annabelle en ik ben in 2024 begonnen met Filosofie. Na 3 jaar Sterrenkunde gestudeerd te hebben ben ik erachter gekomen dat mijn passie toch ergens anders ligt en ik heb hem weer teruggevonden bij mijn nieuwe studie. Vraag je je af of Filosofie een goede keuze zou zijn, heb je vragen over de vakken, onderwerpen of het studentenleven? Hi, mijn naam is Ysabelle en ik ben nu 24 jaar oud. Na een omweg via de studie Psychologie en een tussenjaar, studeer ik nu met veel plezier Geneeskunde.  Ondertussen zit ik alweer in het derde en laatste jaar van de bachelor. Ik heb voor deze studie gekozen, omdat werken in de gezondheidszorg mij erg aantrok en ik het medische veld erg interessant vond. Ik hoop met deze studie uiteindelijke een leuke uitdagende baan te krijgen in het ziekenhuis.

Geneeskunde is een leuke maar uitdagende studie, die ondanks dat goed te combineren is met commissies en bijbaantjes.

Hoi, mijn naam is Lot en ik ben 22 jaar oud. Ik ben derdejaars Geneeskunde student. Na een afwijzing van een andere Geneeskunde studie en daardoor een tussenjaar ben ik uiteindelijk hier in de prachtige stad Groningen beland. En hier doe ik mijn droom studie! Ik wist van jongs af aan dat ik Geneeskunde wilde studeren en ben tot op heden ook erg blij met mijn studiekeuze. In welke stad ik wilde studeren was nog niet direct duidelijk. Ik heb daarom veel open dagen bezocht. Uiteindelijk ben ik zelfs naar Groningen gekomen wat voor mij een heel eind is. Maar ik werd direct verliefd op deze mooie studentenstad en deze goede Universiteit en ik heb geen moment spijt gehad van mijn keuze!

Waarom ik Geneeskunde wilde studeren? Omdat ik erg geïnteresseerd ben in het menselijk lichaam en hoe het precies werkt. Vooral ook het menselijk contact in het beroep lijkt mij leuk en daarnaast de vele medische mysteries die je zou kunnen oplossen. Bij de RUG word je al in de eerste weken van de studie geïntroduceerd aan patiënten dit maakt het leren over een ziekte erg interessant en een stuk persoonlijker. Daarnaast leer je veel andere bruikbare tools zoals presenteren, communicatie en onderzoek doen.

Geneeskunde is een uitdagende studie maar daarnaast heb je genoeg tijd voor sporten, baantjes en leuke commissies!

Heyhoi, ik ben Hanna, 19 jaar en ik zit momenteel in mijn tweede jaar van de bachelor Geschiedenis. Naast mijn studie ben ik actief lid van een christelijke studentenvereniging, werk ik bij een boekhandel, probeer ik zo af en toe nog wat te sporten en hou ik heel erg van lezen en gezelligheid.

Waarom Geschiedenis?
Plezier in het vak geschiedenis was de grootste reden voor mij om deze studie te kiezen. Hoe mensen in het verleden leefden heeft me altijd mateloos geboeid. Verder vind ik het heel interessant om te kijken naar grote ontwikkelingen die door de tijd heen te zien zijn, hiervan te leren en op vandaag de dag toe te passen. Daarnaast heeft alles wat er nu is een geschiedenis. Als je die geschiedenis kent en snapt, helpt het ook heel erg om de samenleving beter te begrijpen. En als je het beter begrijpt, kan je er ook beter iets aan veranderen, of je snapt waarom het zo moet blijven zoals het is. Deze studie is dus van enorm maatschappelijk belang.

Voor het maken van de keuze voor Geschiedenis heb ik me verdiept in heel veel studies en heb ik heel veel open dagen in verschillende steden bezocht. Daar sprong Geschiedenis echt uit. Vervolgens ben ik naar meerdere meeloopdagen geweest om te kijken of het echt wat voor mij was en in welke stad ik wilde gaan studeren.

Hi guys! My name is Helena Hamera and I am a second year GRL student. I am a very open and curious person, which is why GRL was a perfect fit for me. Since I can remember, I have been interested in many fields of studies and life. I am fascinated by psychology, but on the other hand, I am also interested in global politics and economy. Thanks to the GRL's interdisciplinary curriculum, I can combine further learning about both of the disciples and many more. Furthermore, our programme not only combines many disciplines but also connects all of them by its focus on global challenges and local solutions, which I believe is the right approach to have in this complex world of ours:)

Hallo! Mijn naam is Sarah Elgersma, ik ben 20 jaar oud en ik ben tweedejaars studente Griekse en Latijnse taal en cultuur. Ik woon in Groningen en kom hier ook vandaan. Ik ben actief lid bij Boreas, de studievereniging van Grieks en Latijn, en heb in mijn eerste jaar als commissaris gediend in het bestuur. Naast de studie ben ik dol op lezen, sporten en mijn vrienden zien en ik heb ook nog een leuk baantje in de horeca!

Waarom Grieks en Latijn?
Ik studeer Grieks en Latijn omdat Latijn op de middelbare school altijd een heel leuk vak heb gevonden. Ik ben dol op taal, maar ook op geschiedenis, kunst, cultuur en filosofie. Deze studie is daarom de perfecte combinatie van al mijn interesses. Ik ben naar meerdere open dagen geweest van de RUG en dit was de eerste studie die me echt aansprak. Om me verder voor te bereiden heb ik ook nog de webklas gevolgd en een meeloopdag gedaan, beide leuke manieren om je te oriënteren op een studie! Ik heb zelf op de middelbare school helemaal geen Grieks gehad. Ik ben er mee begonnen in mijn tussenjaar voorafgaand aan de studie, maar ik heb het grootste deel geleerd in het eerste jaar van de studie. Mocht je in één van de twee talen geen eindexamen gedaan hebben, komt dit zeker goed tijdens je studie!

About Faaizah
My name is Faaizah Halil and I am currently in my second year of the History Bachelor’s programme. I was born and raised in Singapore, and my family has roots in Indonesia and Pakistan which has influenced my historical context significantly. Apart from my studies, I am part of the Groningen Feminist Network which is a student-led, queer, intersectional association in the city that coordinates events and marches for the community. When I am not studying or organising, I hang out with my friends, cook, read and write (just not at the same time). I have recently been getting into replicating dishes from back home, but I have yet to be successful.

Why History?
I chose history because it informs everything that makes up what we know as the present. People, objects, even ideas have an origin story, and I find that endlessly fascinating. I think history also feeds the imagination for building a better and more inclusive society. Because of that, I wanted to make sure that I enrolled in a programme that would do justice to this subject in a globalised context. That was when I found the international track for History at the RUG. I pored over the website and looked at other student testimonials (much like the one you are reading right now) and that really helped me to solidify my decision.

Hi, my name is Twan. While pursuing my Bachelors in 'Liberal Arts & Sciences' I discovered that I would like to be challenged more. So, logically, I joined the 'Bachelor's Honours Programme'. My name is Paulo, and I am from Mozambique. I’m in my third year of the Human Geography and Planning (HGP) degree program. I decided to study HGP because of a combination of two factors: the city and the program's strength. Groningen is a vibrant, green, student city, while the program provides interdisciplinary approaches and a research-driven approach to learning, with theory as its foundation.

Ever since I was young, I have been interested in global challenges such as social inequality, climate change, development, and urbanization, among others. A great benefit of the HGP program is that it dives into all of these challenges in great depth, along with practical, real-world experience from experts in both the physical and human domains.

Throughout my time at the University of Groningen, I have been able to understand how the future of cities and communities is shaped, the dynamics between development at both local and regional levels, and the appropriate skills to visualize solutions and problems.

About Marieke
Heyhey! Mijn naam is Marieke Schelhaas, ik ben 22 jaar oud en woon alweer 3,5 jaar in Groningen. Als ik mezelf voor zou moeten stellen zou ik, dan komt naar voren dat ik ervan hou om bezig te blijven. Ik ben op het moment studentambassadeur, gediplomeerd socioloog, zit in het bestuur van studievereniging ASCI en ben ook nog een tweedejaars student Informatiekunde.

Wanneer ik nog wat tijd over heb voor minder serieuze dingen besteed ik deze (zoals iedereen) graag aan het afspreken met vrienden, tekenen, schilderen, en het kijken van films.

Waarom Informatiekunde?
Na mijn Bachelor Sociologie merkte ik dat ik een heleboel zogenaamde “soft skills” had geleerd, zoals kritisch denken en onderzoek doen. In gesprek met mijn mede-sociologen merkte ik echter dat we allemaal niet echt goed konden benoemen wat we nou eigenlijk hadden geleerd. Bij de Bachelor Informatiekunde vond ik precies wat ik hier gemist heb. In het eerste jaar leer je concrete vaardigheden en maak je een tastbaar eindproduct. Zo leer je programmeren in Python, het opzetten van zelflerende programma’s en bouw je websites. Ieder vak heb je weer een nieuwe vaardigheid opgedaan, en vaak ook nog met een eindproduct wat je op het eind aan je vrienden en familie kan laten zien.

Daarbovenop is Informatiekunde een kleine en gezellige opleiding waardoor iedereen elkaar al snel van naam kent. Hierdoor wordt het makkelijker om elkaar om hulp te vragen als je even vast loopt. Als laatste is het fijne van de Bachelor in Groningen, dat je kan beginnen zonder eerdere voorkennis. Ik ben het levende bewijs dat je deze opleiding gewoon kan volgen, zonder ooit geprogrammeerd te hebben.

About Michelle
Heey! I am Michelle, I am 20 years old and currently in my third year of studying International Business. In high school, I chose a wide range of subjects (Science and Technology with Economics) because I wasn't sure of the career I wanted to pursue. Many studies seemed interesting to me, both social and technical ones. Luckily, I stumbled upon the open day of International Business after a while. It's a very broad study that allows you to explore various career paths in the future.

In IB, you learn a little bit of everything. One big advantage of this program is that you get to spend half a year abroad! It's a mandatory part of your bachelor's degree. For me, this meant studying in New Zealand for the past six months, where I had the time of my life.

Furthermore, the program has a strong focus on an international perspective, which makes it quite different from business administration: when can a company start selling its products internationally, and what should the company consider in this process? This is an important question that you'll often answer in the IB program. I also enjoy learning about different cultures: for example, if you go on a business trip to Japan, it's considered impolite to shake hands, and instead, a bow is expected.

About Liz
My name is Liz Winterhalter and I am a student in the International Relations and International Organizations Bachelor’s programme. I was born in the United States but was raised mainly across the Middle East and Europe. This cosmopolitan start to my life has motivated me to pursue the study of politics and of course take a major interest in the languages and cultures of the world. As far as hobbies go, I love going to the gym, playing video games, drawing, knitting, and playing chess. Additionally, next to my studies, I am an active member of the IRIO study association Clio.

Why IRIO?
I chose the IRIO programme here at the University of Groningen because I saw so much potential in the classes that are provided. Due to my background of moving, I had absolutely no geographical limit to where I could place my application, but Groningen spoke to me for three main reasons. The first reason is that the courses within the programme are specific. With IR studies in general, they tend to be very broad, so seeing that the individual courses are all for a specific field was very intriguing. Secondly, I loved the built-in language course to study. Language learning is a huge passion of mine, and having another language in the field of IR is an invaluable skill. Lastly, the overall flexible course structure, and the ability to have a bachelor's degree that can really be supplemented with anything additional you wish to take is a huge advantage.

Over Isa
Ik ben Isa en ik studeer Internationale Betrekkingen & Internationale Organisatie. Ik kom uit Overijssel maar ben in 2023 verhuisd naar Groningen. Momenteel ben ik actief lid van SIB (Studentenvereniging voor Internationale Betrekkingen) en speel ik twee keer per week volleybal bij Donitas. Naast studeren lees ik graag, speel ik piano, eet ik met vrienden en speel ik games.

Waarom IRIO?
Ik kwam voor het eerst in aanraking met IRIO omdat een familielid het studeerde. Een jaar later begon ik met het proberen van verschillende MUN-debatten en ontdekte hoe beperkt mijn kijk op de wereld eigenlijk was. Als kind besef je opeens dat de wereld veel groter is dan je achtertuin en dit was het moment ik besefte hoeveel groter dan dat het nog was.

Ik koos IRIO vooral omdat het zeer relevant is. Voor mij werd het leuk omdat alles wat je kunt leren toepasbaar is op echte nieuwsberichten en actuele debatten. Het idee om wereldwijde problemen te kunnen ontleden voorbij generalisaties zoals bijvoorbeeld 'dit land/ding is slecht' naar 'waarom?' en 'hoe?' sprak me erg aan. Ook leek IRIO de beste studie voor mij omdat het veel verschillende vakken heeft. Je krijgt een toolbox met internationale geschiedenis, economie, rechten, politicologie, filosofie etc. Daarnaast vond ik de studie in Groningen vooral uniek omdat het een vreemde taaldeel heeft. Ik overwoog bijvoorbeeld diplomatiek te gaan doen en het wegnemen van taalbarrières komt erg goed van pas.

Hello everyone! I am Wouter, a twenty year old Life Science and Technology student and I am currently in my second year of the study. When I was choosing what I wanted to study I was not really sure what I wanted, all I knew was that I wanted it to have something to do with Biology. This was because I was especially interested in how the human body worked and why the body does what it does. The logical choice would of course have been to just go study Biology, but I was also interested in how the other sciences, such as chemistry and physics, could explain how all sorts of biological processes worked. What I love the most about studying math is how it teaches you to think critically and tackle problems in creative ways. I really enjoy spotting patterns, solving puzzles, and applying math to real-world situations. I like the feeling of accomplishment that comes from solving complex problems and seeing how math connects to everything around us.

About Ingrid
I am Ingrid Stefan, a third-year Media Studies student and an aspiring journalist from Romania. When I’m not writing, reading, or researching - whether it’s for uni or UKrant - I love to pack my bags and travel as much and as far as possible. Actually, I’m almost constantly planning my next trip somewhere. I’m also a fashion enthusiast and enjoy going on a thrifting adventure every once in a while, whether it’s in Groningen, Amsterdam, or even the secondhands in Vienna. Why Media Studies?
I chose Media Studies because I knew I wanted to be a journalist since I was 16, and was looking for a programme that could provide training in that direction. What helped the most in choosing this programme was a mix of thorough research into the course catalogue and participation in a month-long event, in which I could experience bits and pieces of a course every week and do a short assignment. Given that I was still living in Romania, that provided a good glimpse of what Media Studies in Groningen feels like.

Hey! Mijn naam is Alana Swinkels, ik ben 22 jaar en momenteel een tweedejaars student Midden-Oostenstudies. Oorspronkelijk kom ik uit het zuiden van Nederland, maar ik ben voor mijn studie naar Groningen verhuisd. Buiten mijn studie ben ik ook actief in een commissie, sport ik graag bij de ACLO en werk ik bij Studium Generale. Bij mooi weer zul je me ook vaak tegenkomen in het Noorderplantsoen of op een terras!

Waarom Midden-Oostenstudies?
Ik had eerst de studie International Relations gekozen. Na dit een jaar te hebben gestudeerd, ontdekte ik dat ik cultuur, geschiedenis en religie erg interessant vind en dat ik politieke theorie minder leuk vind. Daarom besloot ik Midden-Oostenstudies (MOS) als tweede bachelor te gaan volgen. Het Midden-Oosten is een enorm interessante en diverse regio, die ook vaak (negatief) in het nieuws is. Bij deze studie leer je kritisch te kijken naar de oorzaken en gevolgen van de ontwikkelingen in deze regio. En natuurlijk leer je ook Arabisch of Hebreeuws, wat voor mij een groot pluspunt is.

Over Welmoed
Hallo! Mijn naam is Welmoed Leinenga. Ik ben momenteel 21 jaar en ik zit nu in het tweede jaar van mijn studie Nederlandse Taal en Cultuur aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Ik ben dus nu vaak te vinden op de universiteit en als ik daar niet te vinden ben, dan ben ik in boeken- en kringloopwinkels aan het struinen. Ook houd ik van koken en het maken van muziek. Zo zing ik graag en speel ik gitaar in mijn vrije tijd.

Nederlands is mijn tweede studie. Ik heb namelijk eerder logopedie gestudeerd op de Hanze. Ik ben in mijn derde jaar van studie veranderd, omdat ik mijn creativiteit niet kwijt kon in het praktijkgerichte onderwijs.

Waarom Nederlandse Taal en Cultuur?
Ik heb gekozen voor de studie Nederlands, omdat het een ontzettend brede studie is. Zo komen er drie vakgebieden aanbod gedurende de studie. De drie vakgebieden zijn: Taalbeheersing, Taalkunde en Letterkunde. Bij Taalbeheersing en Taalkunde bestudeer je de ontwikkeling van de Nederlandse taal en taalgebruik in teksten en communicatie. Binnen de Letterkunde houd je je voornamelijk bezig met de literatuur en cultuur van de middeleeuwen tot het heden. Dus zoals ik al zei is het een ontzettend brede studie. Ook is het een studie waar je je creativiteit goed kwijt kan, bijvoorbeeld in het vak creatief schrijven.

Het feit dat het een kleine studie is trok mij ook ontzettend aan. Er zijn niet veel mensen die Nederlands studeren en dit maakt de studie ontzettend persoonlijk en gezellig.

Wat mij hielp bij het maken van mijn studiekeuze was het bezoeken van meerdere studies op de opendagen. Ook raad ik echt aan om bijvoorbeeld een keertje mee te lopen of te participeren in de webklassen, omdat je dan een realistisch en duidelijk beeld krijgt van de opleiding.

Over Dax
Mijn naam is Dax en ik ben bachelorstudent Pedagogische Wetenschappen. Ik heb ooit gekozen voor Pedagogische Wetenschappen omdat het een ontzettend brede studie is met een divers werkveld. Wat mij hierin vooral aanspreekt, is dat je niet alleen individuen helpt, maar altijd de hele context meeneemt – denk aan de school, (sport)vereniging, vriendjes en de familie. Dit maakt het werkveld dynamisch en biedt de mogelijkheid om in verschillende sectoren aan de slag te gaan. Ik vind het belangrijk om bij te dragen aan de ontwikkeling van kinderen en gezinnen, en met mijn studie bouw ik aan een toekomst waarin ik dat kan doen.

Hoi toekomstige student!
Mijn naam is Abigail. Ik ben 19 jaar oud en zit momenteel in mijn tweede bachelorjaar van de studie Rechtsgeleerdheid. Ook ben ik met veel plezier actief bij de studievereniging JFV (Juridische Faculteitsvereniging Groningen). Daarnaast ben ik studentambassadeur, waarbij ik onder andere aanwezig ben tijdens de open dagen en meeloopdagen. Deze dagen helpen om een beter beeld te krijgen bij de studie en bieden de kans om vragen te stellen. Het bijwonen van dat soort momenten kan je erg helpen bij het maken van een goede studiekeuze. Ik kon persoonlijk na de meeloopdag met volle overtuiging kiezen voor Rechtsgeleerdheid aan de RUG.  

De studie rechtsgeleerdheid is uitdagend. Ben jij vaak op de hoogte van de laatste nieuwsartikelen, hou je van lezen, heb je een gevoel voor rechtvaardigheid en vind je het leuk om te debatteren? Dan zit je absoluut in de goede richting. Dit zijn natuurlijk geen vereisten en kan je allemaal ontwikkelen.

Als de studie Rechtsgeleerdheid aan de RUG jouw interesse heeft gewekt, maar je toch nog met vragen zit, mag je mij gerust mailen. Graag zelfs! Dit mag inhoudelijk over de studie zijn, maar ook over hoe het studentenleven in Groningen en/of in het algemeen is, of wat je maar wil weten voor het maken van je studiekeuze.

Over Meike
Hoi! Mijn naam is Meike, ik ben 22 jaar oud en ik zit momenteel in mijn laatste jaar van de bachelor Religiewetenschappen aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.

Toen ik jong was vond ik het moeilijk om een vervolgstudie te kiezen na het behalen van mijn vwo-diploma. Tijdens een tussenjaar heb ik mij georiënteerd op een vervolgopleiding. Ik kwam erachter dat ik een diepe interesse heb in verschillende opleidingen binnen de sociale wetenschappen. Ik stuiterde heen en weer tussen psychologie, filosofie, sociologie, antropologie en humanistiek, maar al deze opleidingen voldeden niet 100% aan wat ik zocht. Ze misten een soort interdisciplinair aspect. Ik had nog nooit gehoord van Religiewetenschappen, totdat iemand mij vertelde over deze opleiding. Ik bezocht een Open Dag en Een Dag Student, en daarna was ik eruit: Religiewetenschappen heeft deze disciplines allemaal, dus koos ik voor deze opleiding.

Mijn keuze voor Religiewetenschappen is een van mijn beste keuzes uit mijn leven geweest. Het studieprogramma is heel breed en is erop gericht om studenten op te leiden tot brede en kritische sociale wetenschappers. Kortgezegd bestaat het eerste jaar uit inleidende cursussen over de vijf wereldreligies enerzijds en verschillende perspectieven op religie anderzijds, zoals sociologie, psychologie, antropologie en filosofie. In het tweede jaar ga je je verder thematisch verdiepen. Bijvoorbeeld hoe religie zich manifesteert in een moderne samenleving, maar ook hoe religie heeft bijgedragen aan samenlevingen zoals we die nu kennen. Het laatste jaar bestaat uit minorvakken en het schrijven van je scriptie.

De faculteit Religie, Cultuur en Maatschappij is klein, zit in een prachtig eigen gebouw en er heerst daardoor een persoonlijke sfeer. Je hebt nauw contact met je studiegenoten en docenten, en je bent dus allesbehalve een nummer. Je kunt lid worden van de studievereniging Gerardus van der Leeuw, waarbinnen je verschillende commissies kunt doen. Er is, kortom, genoeg ruimte om jezelf verder te ontwikkelen gedurende je studententijd, op tal val vlakken.

Hi! My name is Meike, I'm 22 years old and I'm currently in my last year of the BA Religious Studies at the University of Groningen.

Younger me had difficulty choosing my next studies after graduating from my secondary education. It took me some time and a gap year to find out what I really wanted. When I was orienting for my next studies at the university I soon found out I had a deep interest in different degrees within the social sciences. I found myself bouncing between psychology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology and humanistics but thought all these programs were not 100% it - they lacked a kind of interdisciplinary aspect. I had never heard of Religious Studies. It was just by accident that someone told me about this program and advised me to visit an Open Day or join a Student for a Day event. After doing so, I realised Religious Studies combined all the fields of studies I was initially interested in. My study choice was quickly made and so began my career in Religious Studies.

Flash forward to current me, I can say my choice to study Religious Studies was one of the best ones ever made. Looking back on the last three years, I can definitely say some things about my experiences of the programme and the student life at our faculty. The study programme is very broad and is really aimed to educate its students to become broadly and critical social scientists. In a nutshell, the first year consists of introductory courses to the five world religions and courses on analytical perspectives within the study of religion, such as sociology, psychology, anthropology and philosophy. These courses serve as a kind of background for the second year which is meant to dive deeper into different subjects within the field of religious studies. These courses focus for example on how religion manifests itself in a modern day society but also how religion has contributed to societies as we know them today. The last year's programme consists of minor courses and writing your thesis.

Then there is the student life at the faculty which is very worth mentioning as well. Coming from a small town and being used to a small community during my secondary education, I was hoping I wouldn't become a so-called anonymous student during my next studies. The faculty of Religion, Culture and Society is small but it has an open and ´gezellige´ atmosphere. There are many options for students if they would like to be more active within the faculty, such as the opportunity to join one of the study associations committees. What I like most is the close contact between my classmates and other students but also between the students and our teachers. I think everyone at our faculty really appreciates the open and accessible culture.

Over Tristan
Hoi! Ik ben Tristan en ik doe de bachelor Sociologie. Op de middelbare was ik erg geïnteresseerd in de maatschappij en het gedrag van mensen. Ik vond het interessant hoe de maatschappij veranderde door de mensen die er deel van uitmaken. Ik wist dus wel waar mijn interesses lagen, maar niet wat ik later wilde doen. Hierom koos ik voor Sociologie: een studie die mijn interesses combineerde, maar nog erg breed is, zodat ik later nog allerlei kanten op kan gaan. 

Tijdens de bachelor leer je onder andere op verschillende manieren hoe de maatschappij in elkaar zit. Je leert de theorie bij hoorcolleges, en vaak pas je dit toe bij werkcolleges. Ook zijn er veel verschillende projecten in de studie waarin je leert hoe je zelf onderzoek moet doen. Sommige projecten zijn van externe opdrachtgevers. Het maakt het erg leuk dat je in opdracht van hen iets kan neerzetten waar ook daadwerkelijk iets mee wordt gedaan.

Wat ik nog meer leuk vind aan Sociologie is dat het redelijk kleinschalig is. Dit zorgt ervoor dat je veel van je medestudenten bij naam kent en dat er een gezellige sfeer heerst. Ook hebben we een hechte studievereniging die allerlei leuke activiteiten organiseert voor Sociologie studenten.

Over Thirsa
Hoi! Mijn naam is Thirsa en ik ben momenteel masterstudent Sociologie, met als specialisatie Criminaliteit en Veiligheid. Hiervoor heb ik de bachelor Sociologie gevolgd en met veel plezier afgerond.

Het maken van een studiekeuze vond ik destijds behoorlijk lastig. Ik had brede interesses en vond het moeilijk om een studie te kiezen die écht bij mij paste. Daarom heb ik bij veel verschillende opleidingen gekeken en lang getwijfeld. Wat uiteindelijk voor mij de doorslag gaf, was mijn interesse in maatschappelijke vraagstukken. Ik ben altijd al nieuwsgierig geweest naar hoe onze samenleving werkt, waarom bepaalde dingen zijn zoals ze zijn en vooral hoe ze misschien beter zouden kunnen. Die maatschappelijke betrokkenheid bracht mij bij de studie Sociologie. 

Bij de studie leer je kritisch te kijken naar de wereld om je heen, hoe de mechanismen achter maatschappelijke uitkomsten werken, maar leer je ook nadenken over beleidsmatige oplossingen. Veel onderwerpen die worden behandeld sluiten aan op de actualiteit en dat maakt de studie naar mijn mening ook erg leuk en totaal niet stoffig. Daarnaast is het een best brede studie, de samenleving bestaat namelijk ook uit veel verschillende aspecten en hier leren we veel over. Dat maakt de studie erg veelzijdig, maar er is ook genoeg ruimte om je te verdiepen binnen specifieke gebieden van de Sociologie.

Over Laurie
Hoi! Mijn naam is Laurie van der Meijden, ik zit nu in het tweede jaar van de Bachelor Taalwetenschap en woon sinds een jaar in de mooie stad Groningen. Ik ben actief bij een studentenvereniging en ik heb een bijbaan als huishoudelijke hulp. Mijn vrije tijd vul ik met pianospelen en met mijn vriendinnen afspreken en is er altijd wel wat te doen in de stad.

Waarom Taalwetenschap?
Hoewel de naam “Taalwetenschap” me niet direct warm maakte, deed de beschrijving dat wel. De vraag “Hoe ontstaat taal?” heeft me niet meer losgelaten en toen ik van de andere vakken in de bachelor hoorde, als Stoornissen in de Taalontwikkeling, was ik al helemaal geïnteresseerd. Na de Open Dag en Eén Dag Student was ik volledig overtuigd van mijn studiekeuze en ik heb nog geen enkel moment spijt gehad! Taalwetenschap is een ontzettend interessante en gevarieerde opleiding. De vakken van de ene kant zoomen in op hoe taal werkt in de hersenen en ook hoe taalstoornissen ontstaan. Ook meertaligheid wordt besproken. De andere kant focust op taal: hoe taal ontstaat, waar de verandering vandaan komt en hoe taal is opgebouwd. In tegenstelling tot wat veel mensen denken is deze studie niet gefocust op het Nederlands of op een andere taal, maar op taal in het algemeen. Kortom, de Wetenschap achter Taal!

Over Marie

Hi! Mijn naam is Marie Custers en ik studeer sinds 2021 Tandheelkunde aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Ik ben ontzettend blij met de studiekeuze die ik heb gemaakt, en ik zal je vertellen waarom!

Stel je voor dat je elke dag mensen kunt helpen om ervoor te zorgen dat zijzelf en hun tanden gezond zijn. Dat is precies wat je doet als je tandheelkunde studeert. Binnen de opleiding kun je de theorie die je leert toepassen in de praktijk, wat de opleiding erg afwisselend maakt. Wat het ook afwisselend maakt, is dat je met allerlei verschillende mensen te maken krijgt, jong en oud. Je leert niet alleen over mondproblematiek en hoe je deze oplost, maar ook over hoe je goed met mensen kunt praten en luisteren. En wat ik het meest leuk vind aan de studie: je kunt mensen van hun pijn of problemen afhelpen, en echt van betekenis voor hen zijn!

Wat Groningen onderscheidt van Amsterdam en Nijmegen, is de persoonlijke en intieme sfeer van de studie. De kleinschaligheid van de faculteit in Groningen zorgt voor nauwe interactie tussen studenten en docenten, waardoor een ondersteunende leeromgeving ontstaat. Bovendien vond ik de stad gewoon ontzettend leuk. Je kunt in Groningen genieten van een rijke studentenervaring in een bruisende stad.

Over Jan Pieter

Hoewel voor de opleiding Theologie voorkennis over religie of zelf gelovig zijn geen vereisten zijn, is het voor mij heel bijzonder hoe Theologie mij ook persoonlijk heeft geraakt en verdieping brengt in mijn eigen geloofsleven. Aan de ene kant door teksten uit de bijbel op een andere manier te bekijken en ze te zien als onderdeel binnen een rijke en intrigerende geschiedenis. En aan de andere kant door deel te worden van een groep studenten die bestaat uit veel andersdenkenden die allemaal op een eigen manier met hun geloof - of juist geen geloof - bezig zijn, maar daarnaast ook open staan voor een verrijkend gesprek.

Een van de mooiste kanten aan Theologie is de veelzijdigheid; de bachelor is echt een soort proeverij van verschillende disciplines zoals de talen Grieks en Hebreeuws, en vakken als filosofie, geschiedenis, exegese, sociologie en psychologie. Je vrij bent om je in al deze dingen te verdiepen en om vervolgens te kijken waar je hart licht en waar jij je verder in wilt verdiepen en specialiseren.

Wat ik verder zo uniek vind aan de opleiding is dat we tijdens de colleges eigenlijk altijd de mogelijkheid hebben om verder in te gaan op onderwerpen die ons interesseren. Dit komt mede doordat er sprake is van kleinschalig onderwijs (in een prachtig gebouw!), en er daardoor ruimte is voor persoonlijke aandacht. Het is echt een grote luxe om docenten die ongelofelijk veel weten over hun vakgebied, aan de tand te voelen over wat jij nu echt wil weten. Over die rare tekst in Genesis, die ene niet bijbelse tekst die toch wel heel interessant kan zijn, de ideeën die Luther had over de macht van de Paus of de ideeën van Plato.

Overweeg jij om deze mooie studie te volgen maar twijfel je nog? Dan is het een goed idee om een Open Dag te bezoeken of om je in te schrijven voor Een Dag Student, en om zo een voorproefje te krijgen van echte colleges die je zult krijgen tijdens de opleiding.
