The Netherlands is situated in the north-west part of Europe. Small in size but with extensive international trade links and high standards of education, health care and social equality, the Netherlands is in the heart of Europe. We are one of the founding members of the EU and other European capitals are only a short distance away. Our merchant past is still evident today in both historic architecture and the international outlook of the population. Although Dutch is the main language, English is widely spoken.
Our innovative approach to water management is well-known: it is used for recreational purposes and transport but also contained through land reclamation. This is one example of Dutch innovation. Our society is culturally and ethnically varied within a safe environment: tradition is valued but change welcomed and freedom of religious beliefs is a fundamental right.
