Christopher May (University College)
We seek to further activate students in University College Groningen (UCG) statistics instruction by creating appealing interactive data visualizations of interest to UCG students. Our project is partially inspired by the Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek’s website (https://www.cbs.nl/), which regularly publishes interactive data visualizations pertaining to the issues and peoples of the Netherlands. We are also inspired by other successes in making statistics attractive- e.g. “moneyball” and Nate Silver’s 538 site- and hope to emulate that at UCG. To achieve our goals, the assistant for our project will be responsible for 1) collating data about UCG students as well as data generated by students themselves in their Research & Methodology courses, 2) programming attractive web-based data visualizations using the program Shiny (https://shiny.rstudio.com/), and 3) creating a robust, yet easily maintainable, database.
